We're switching from Saxon to Singapore, too! We liked Saxon pretty well, but Joy doesn't need that much rote and dh would like the girls to learn how to do mental math, and that is something that Singapore excels at. (Or so I've heard. LOL) We never did the script part of Saxon.. We just did the worksheets, and if I needed clarification on something I peeked at the teacher book. I probably haven't opened it half a dozen times. :)

Joy and I met DH at The Homeschool Store (http://www.thehomeschoolstore.com/) today at lunch. It's only a few miles from here, but we hadn't been before. I think I'm probably not allowed to go without DH.. It's dangerous!! They have all sorts of fun stuff and I'm not sure I'd be able to stop buying. LOL He's very good at telling me "no" when I start getting carried away, the party pooper. ;)

Anyway, I had mentioned switching to Singapore (we're within a week of finishing Saxon 1, so we needed to get something soon) and he wanted to look at it. We looked at Saxon Math 2 and Singapore 2A&B, and came home with the Singapore books. Yayy! :) I'm tempted to skip the last few lessons of Saxon and go straight to Singapore, just cuz I'm excited about it. LOL

Duhhhh, I should go to my teacher store and see if they have Singapore! I even have a $5 coupon, so that'd help!

Thanks for that reminder Marylyn! :D

We use Singapore and Miquon, but I don't think it's really a supplementing thing, since I don't think either program really lacks... I just like them both and so do my littles.

WHat is TT? I saw it used twice in reference to Singapore

For the lady with the 6th grader who has "holes" You should check out the Keys To Math series from Modern Curriculum Press, they are short, quick little books that explain all the ins and outs of specific math topics, like fractions, decimals, geometry, and more starting out at the very most basic little facts.

I used them when my MUS kids switched to Saxon. No offense to MUS, all my fault, we used it (old version) for 1 level, did no schoolwork for 2-3 yrs while we opened our family business and then started back with Saxon instead because we were out of MUS materials and the stupid little green units were eaten by the couch.

Just wanted to pipe in again about the Singapore books that we chose to switch too..

    It has been fabulous!
    Lovin it for us!

May not work for you guys but it is awesome for us!

If it is a review set, I can tell them to read it themselves, then they go tot he workbook to do the assignments... Rarely do they need help.

If it is new subject matter, we do much of what is in the text book together on the white board, then they go off to do the assignment in the workbook...

    LOVIN it!

Again this works for us, because math is their strong point. I believe that makes the difference. Also it has taught them MUCH more about doing math MENTALLY, which has boosted their confidence and speed and accuracy.

So if your child loves math and can read the directions of a basic grade level book, I recommend singapore math.

    Singapore Maths

    Hi,

It caught my attention abt some of you switching to Singapore Maths. For me, still new, Im using Singapore maths for my 12 yo, 10 yo and 8 yo too. I browse thru the S'pore Maths books and like it cos at the end of every topic it has some critical thinking question as application to what has been learned.

I just started homeschooling early this year and so I would appreciate that all of you could give some advice or pointers, not only on Maths, but other subjects too.

    Thank you.

    Regards,
    JP

I have a question (which might be a stupid question) but I went to the Singapore site and looked up 4th grade for my son and they have no less than 25 books for the 4th grade!!! How do you know which ones to buy? I think my son would revolt if I brought all of that home for next year lol.

    Dear homeschool2boys,

Oh no, it is not stupid question. Im not surprised that you are not sure which is which. I managed to go to the bookstore selling most Singapore books and that's where I found out that there are many publisher.
The publisher that the singapore public school use is the Federal. Anyway, looking thru most of it, and recommendation by the sales, I bought those from Publisher Shinglee by Prof Foong Pui Yee, mainly because of the colourful pages compared to Federal.

However, Shinglee is more expensive due to the colourful pages.

Any publisher is the same, they stick to the same method of teaching.

    Hope that helps.

    Rgds,
    JP
