I just got my kids 2 different levels.....

    Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary
    &
    Merriam-Webster's Elementary Dictionary

The kids like them! I personally have the super duper (are there really THAT many words??) type dictionary which was way too much to ask my kids to use :)

I actually just got rid of all but one printed dictionary in favor of dictionary.com We had a bunch of picture dictionaries- I hate them, they only show such a small fraction of words, with such simplistic "definitions" and no word history, derivations, etc. The one we held onto is a huge 2 volume (A-L and M-Z) set we got at a yard sale for 25 cents, it used to be part of an encyclopedia set. Each volume of this dictionary weighs about 5 pounds. I'm thinking lesser dictionaries are guilty of being "dumbed down"

I got to thinking we needed a new one when the kids could not find simple words in them...such as 'invisible' and many many more.

That's why I decided they each needed their own - and then finding 2 different levels was great. Both kids love them and they do have enough words in each one of them. My son even had to use it today to figue out HOW to use "couch" as a verb :)

I have the Scholastic First Dictionary for Eli to use next year, and have the Scholastic Children's Dictionary for Zach (it's for ages 9-12). He likes it.

I'm a writer and I use onelook.com for my online dictionary/thesaurus. I love it, and we use it sometimes with Zach, too.

we have a big Websters Collegiete ( SP? LOL) dictionary that we use cause it had tabs, but we also have the little paper back school style ones for the kids to keep in the school room.
We also use the .com version when on computer.

I do not have a special dictionary. I use an older one that I bought when I was 20. It comes in handy and if I need to find out more info., I can always look online.

The last one we bought is the Webster's New World Dictionary & Thesaurus Second Edition. paperback

The top of the page is the dictionary and the bottom is the thesaurus.

    So far...thumbs up!

We have that one too!! I like it. My oldest still likes the student dictionary we have but will use it if the word isn't in the student one.
