Some of our best friends used it. Their older daughter who just graduated from college has high reviews of the program as far as preparing a person for college. In fact, it's probably more than most people will need!
Wow, good information. If they have just up to grade 10, that may be why. You are getting everything you need. Thanks for the input.
You're welcome. The only "criticism" I have ever heard of the program is that it's too detailed and too advanced--just what others are looking for, however. Those with hands-on learners or students with ADD often recommend "Winston Grammer," which uses colored cards to actually build sentences. You'll soon discover how your children learn best and what works with them. Even, so, don't be afraid to try a variety of the wonderful products available. Blessings to you!
For high school english we've used a variety of things. Vocab: Wordly Wise Vocab: Vocabulary for Classical Roots Grammar: Easy grammar Writing: Jensen's Format Writing
Rod and Staff has more information than most English majors in college ever come across in their studies. I would definitely start a level or two lower than your kid's grade levels their in now. When we began using Rod and Staff, I combined both teens (16 and 14) into their grade 8 for English. This year, the oldest went onto community college and took two English classes their. He did fine in both classes. I taught English in a Christian school using Abeka. It tends to "beat" the grammar portion to death and offers little to no opportunity for critical thinking. The students who struggled with English, never really improved beyond a certain point. I homeschooled my nephew for a few weeks on several different occasions and he was using Bob Jones. Bob Jones has beautiful samples and the layout is interesting, but there seems to be much teacher prepwork. I would use this over Abeka, however. I am tutoring a teen this year who used Easy Grammar. He has had little retention with this program. I think to get the most out of Easy Grammar, writing must be incorporated from some other source so the grammar skills aren't lost. He now uses Rod and Staff with MUCH better results. We used Write Source products for four years before making the switch to Rod and Staff. Once again, an interesting (and expensive product) that seemed to offer little retention. I don't know if it is the set up of the workbook or not. Rod and Staff teaches grammar and writing in short, bearable lessons. There is almost no prepwork for the teacher and there is no workbook involved. Students are expected to write out their work on real paper and this may be one reason the retention is better. You can't beat their price either! Blessings, Trishy kriagirl.blogspot.com
We have used Abeka successfully since K (13 years) and think it is wonderful. I LOVE the curriculum and found it incredibly easy to use. Ds' are graduating in May from Abeka Academy.
IF you really want a good English class try BJU, it has excellent teacher books and test booklets, my ds10 is using it for the second year next year. Let me tell you that I have been doing hsing for 11 years now ( wee?) and This is the first curriculuim I have not had to fight with a child about doing, I did not get the teacher manual but got the cheapy version of the teacher stuff... black and white yet it has grading and some other stuff in it even! I went through CLP to order for that set to be really cheap last year, and this year dh is going through cbd cause they have better prices this year.
