Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some good ideas on homeschooling with another family? We have some friends who are also going to be homeschooling next year and we were thinking it might be nice to do some subjects together, like science and history maybe. Has anyone done this before and what were your experiences? Was it more work, less work, was it worth it? What subjects did you do together? We thought it would also be nice for the kids to get together for some social interaction. We don't have any homeschooling co-op or anything like that in our area. Thanks!

The big thing is to lay out out the responsibilities so it it clear to everyone what is expected. That heads off a lot of...."oh well I thought you were....." and then people getting mad about that.

I'd start with one subject and see how it works out.

Ditto what Sheila said. We're in a small co-op that has specific bylaws, etc...but even with that, sometimes their are more that have to carry more of the load. Try to even it out as much as possible

I would think science experiments would be a fun way to start or rockets or something that all age levels would enjoy. Even my "non-science loving" kid likes experiments.

I have a friend I would love to do that with for Phillip, but as much as I love this lady dearly, I know she is TOTALLY disorganized, and think I would get so frustrated with her that it would ruin our friendship. But it CAN work, and I think it's a good idea if you did it with the right people.

Thanks for your replies, it gives me something to think on! I'm not sure what we'll end up doing.

I have a friend who does this...we are going to be part of a big co-op next year, so we've never done like this yet.

My one friend does "Friday School" with another friend. They are both using the same curriculum so they do a project together and fun stuff (and the older girls they have play together while they do this).

Next year these same families are hoping to do a Spanish class for all the kids (ages 4 thru 10)...we might join it - it would be 4 or 5 families which would be about 15 kids....but it sounds like a lot of fun. And it wouldn't be really structured, like once a month we'd get together go over the lessons we did all month and maybe have a "fiesta".

But...yes, I'd lay out responsibilities so that no one's feelings go hurt! :D
