Has anyone read these books or seen the movie? If so, what did you think? Just wondering - ds wants to study the books, there are loads of free lesson plans on the net, I am just waiting for the books to come in to the library so i can read them and decide.
My son loves them. I got my books from Children's book of the month club. I have not read them myself, but he just loves to read them.
Got any links? I googled and found the Spiderwick wedsite had some things on there but didn't really find anything else. Ann

We watched the movie at the drive-in. The kids loved it. Pretty entertaining for kids and adults. I would still love to read the books.
I never finished the first one but loved what I read. I was a huge fan of the Borrower's growing up and this is what it reminded me of. My dd enjoyed them, also.
I have read the first book. There is a little bit of swearing; not enough for me to ban it for an older child, & some questionable ethics ~ enough for me to want to read the book before my child does. Overall I wasn't very impressed ~ more by the poor quality of the writing & plotting than anything offensive in the books. Read them & judge for yourself.
I liked them, I saw HUGE movie potential, I'm hoping the movie matches what I saw in my mind as we read it, I always seem to expect too much from the movies. The books were cute, though. Definitely NOT for the "anti-mythical-creatures" families. I only read the first two books, I lose interest in kids books really fast, although I did suffer through Lemony Snicket series up to book 9. Yeah, I wanted to grab the stupid banker by the collar.

Celtic, I will definitely read them myself first, especially after your comments. Mrs H, we loved the lemony snickett books, lol. Thanks everyone for the feedback.
The original Spiderwick Chronicles books, the 5, are great. We read them as a family, then went to see the movie. We've since purchased several books, one on sprites, one is like the field guide from the movie and another I can't remember. If you go on to read the 'after Spiderwick' or 'beyond Spiderwick', can't remember exactly how its prefaced, those aren't as well written, have some cursing and just aren't as good. I decided we didn't need to read those. Stick with the first 5.
