We have a local teacher who will be hosting the classes next year (full year program) and it looks awesome.... but expensive.

Writing is a huge issue with us as both kids need to work on it. But I wanted to check to see if anyone else has done it.

The person is charging $375 per child for the whole year and I don't think that's a HUGE amount - but with 2 it's a little expensive (especially when their entire curric was only $425 for 2 kids with R&S)

At least she has payment plans :)

I just noticed - it's also called IEW

That seems like alot of money for it. My sister taught it for her co-op group. Sd did a little of it but I was not impressed with some of the ideas in the series like writing in the books you are using for research. I have big issues with anything advocating writing in books, even in pencil but that is just me. I know my sister really liked it and it helped her boys.

Thanks for your opinion. The person teaching it actually trained and worked with the guy who wrote it (she even does conferences for him). I think the materials online were $100+ and then she is teaching 1 1/2 hours per week all "school year" through April.

I'm not a big fan of writing in books - and honestly I hadn't heard that. It goes against what I'm teaching my DD right now also - LOL. So I'll email her and ask.

I just bought it for my kids and I'm so EXCITED to get started....and wish I had purchased it for this year (but was afraid my 2nd grader was a bit too young).

Anyway, I don't have experience other than watching the teacher and student DVDs (only the first of each). We're not starting until after our standardized testing this week/next week.

You can teach it with just the teacher DVDs but I opted to get the Student ones because I think they'll appeal to my oldest better than just my instruction. I have friends that have used it long term and love it.

Hmmm - I might need to look at it as a "self teaching" thing vs a class somewhere else. My husband wasn't thrilled about the $$ and the person has only 1 space left in the class I would put my DD in for 2008-2009 school year and I felt a little pressure with that.

So I'm planning on passing on the class but may look at it in another way later :)

I've been asking my dh if I could buy this for quite some time now. It is a bit pricy, but from what I hear it's well worth it.
I'm still hoping my hubby will give in this summer... we shall see!

OT: Funny - I write in my books ALL THE TIME. I need to annotate and make comments; I highlight, anything! I am a firm believer in interacting with that text!
I am also a dog-earer, and now my kids all are too!

I used to HATE the idea of writing in books- but studies have shown that when you write in a book (interact with the text) you learn more.

I rarely write in books now, and when I do, I use pencil.

In college, we were SUPPOSED to write in the books but I always suspected it was so they could sell more "new" texts the following year.

I've got IEW and TJed on order for next year, I've heard nothing but good.
