Thanks Amanda. We are doing Veteran's Day. I had Vicki's uncles & great uncles that were in the service to fill out a paper. They wrote what branch of service. What the dates they were in it. They also wrote what rank they held. If they were in war. They also put where they were stationed at. What they liked & didn't like. It is neat to read all the stuff we have got so far. I have enjoyed it. We picked up 2 letters from her great uncles today. One was in the Marines & the other was in the Army. The one in the Army was in WW11. He told some real interesting stories. He just cried. It really blessed my heart to hear him.

I wanted Vicki to understand how we got our freedom and why it is so important to keep. I also wanted her to learn about her heritage.

Last year I got this book about turkeys from the library, it looked okay on the cover, but it was about turkey farming for food!!!!
Judged a book by its cover, I did!

    What an awesome idea!!

I LOVE this idea, Trish! Mind if I borrow it? ;)

Not only do we have a lot of family that has served in the military, but also several members at our church. I'm going to get to work right away on some questions.

I'm so excited!!! We've been trying to instill in our kids the sacrifices that the US military has made for all of our freedoms.

Cute story: we were out shopping one day and saw a soldier in his dress uniform (was traveling home) and my son went up to him at the store and said, "Are you a 'Army Guy'?" (he was 4 at the time). The young soldier kinda laughed and said, "Yes I am" and my ds said, "Thanks for helping our country" and turned and walked back to me. It floored the soldier! He really got a kick out of it. It was proof to me that my kids have been listening to the things we teach them. :D

Becky you should get one of those kits that you can light up clock with 2 potatoes,Check the pbskids ZOOM website they experimented with other produce. and there is one where you can use 2 batteries to start up a tiny light bulb. Also ther is a benjermanfranklin website for kids and it has activities-- I was trying to get the exact site name and lost my post. And there is another science one I will get for you. But you know the simplest demo to do is rub your sock feet accross the carpet and see if you get sparks form static or rub a balloon in your hair and stick it to a wall to see static electricity. On Mr. Rogers one day they had a thingy where they showed how light bulbs were made at a factory, you might ask a library if they have a video like that to check out. Also call up you local electric company see if they give tours, and if they have free educational material. ---Think like a teacher use your community! I'm not sure how electric this idea is but you could do an experiment with batteries and find out which battery is actually better, buy a few brands and use them on a toy that uses them up fast, record how long each brand last. Write e-mails to the battery companies to let them know you are doing a school experiment and ask if they will send you one of their batteries or a coupon for their product so its not too expensive.

Sure you can use the idea. I thought it would be neat. I have learned a lot of really good things these people have to say. It is something the children can keep forever.

Aball, are you talking about the site Ben's Guide? I'll take a look at that. I'm not science oriented, so this will be challenging.
Language Arts was my thing, and I have no problem showing her that!

We are doing a traditional Thanksgiving study, but we are going into depth. For example, today the girls learned all about the Mayflower. They learned about the rudder, keel, crow's nest and their favorite, the poop deck. We labeled a print out with all the parts of the ship. Then, we spent some time discussing what those 60 days must have been like for them.

We will be discussing each part of the story like that. It will be good for them to gain an understanding. Plus, they are young and maybe should know what the first Thanksgiving was all about.

    Middle school topics

    Hi there,
This month is our second month of homeschooling.
Ls is 12 years old, planning for him has been difficult especially since he's not my son. But... we have gone through an interesting time and are getting to know each other better.

    We are focusing on:
Math: World Travels Math, a geometry and measurement unit that takes the student around the world looking at the math involved in famous buildings (Eiffel Tower, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Opera House)
Science: Interactions between Organisms, cells, osmosis, diffusion, body systems, population systems and ecosystems
Geography: Looking at what defines place, region, interaction, movement and envrionment through short case studies
History: the development of New France, Canadian history from 1400-1700
Language arts: We're reading 2 books right now, we're doing a novel study on "The Convicts" by Iain Lawrence and we're reading out loud "The Filles du Roi Diary of Helene St. Onge" (who came to Canada in the 1600s) by Maxine Trottier.

Of course we won't get through all of this in a month, espeically since we have some changes in the line up due to holidays and events we want to do (I only work with Ls for 4 hours a day). Like this week there's the Remembrance Day service on Friday.

I'd be really interested to see what other middle school aged homeschool kids are doing.

Wow! It seems you are doing alot with him. My daughter is in the 7th grade. She is reading The Sign of The Beaver for an online classes. Then doing Mindmenders for math this year. Handwriting (cursive) and a class for writing (They give you an idea and you write the paragraph). Language, literature, and a writing skills book too. Then for science and history we do units. History were are on the Underground Railroad, and science varies from week to week. We throw in other things too like health, audiotory reading, coop classes, sign language but these things are not every day.
