My 17 year old nephew, who is generally a good kid, he has never been in any kind of trouble, just hasnt had a whole lot of supervision or direction from his parents. Anyway he was at a friends house Sat night and there was a gun there. They were playing with it and my nephew dropped it and tried to catch it-- when he tried to catch it-- it went off. His 15 year old friend was killed. We feel so awful for her and her family. My nephew was arrested on "Reckless Homicide" charges and he is a mess. He is a tenderhearted kid and I cant imagine what he was thinking! I am not sure what is all going to happen to him, but my brother hired a lawyer to try and help. He is 6 mo away from grad ps, and he suppose to get out of jail Thursday. I told my brother he could come and stay with us. (we live in a different town and I my last name is different) We are concerned for his safety too. If he comes I dont know if I should home school him, or try to work with the ps or work with the ps he is already attending. I dont know if they would give me the cirriculum to finish him out or if I should just get his records go from there or just let him take his GED. I really dont want to send him to ps here b/c I am not sure he can handle it emotionally right now. Please pray for this girls family and my nephew right now too.

How very sad for all involved. Oh my. It would probably be best for him not to go back to his school. He does need to finish school. See if he can do home bound for a few weeks for mental reasons. I also think you are right in that they need to get out of town for a few weeks. Maybe your local school would help with it. He needs to be able to go to graduation somewhere and not have his whole life upset by one bad mistake. He will at some time have to go back and face the other friends and the girl's family too. He can't run from that. Praying for all. How sad.
This is tragic I am praying for this situation. The poor boy. He is lucky to have an aunt like you. He is going to need lots of love to get through this. I will pray for all involved.
Oh, Jill~ I am SO SORRY~ this is an absolutely awful situation. Your poor nephew! I am so glad that you are willing and able to step in and try to help him~ I'm sure that he will need some sort of counselling to go along with whatever you do to help him out school-wise. This is something that he will (unfortunately) carry with him for the rest of his life. My heart is breaking for him right now, and for the family of this young girl who is dead. So sad for everyone involved. I hope the fact that a loaded gun was in the house will be brought up in court. It is not solely your nephews fault. The parents should have been seeing that the gun was not attainable to these kids. Lots of prayers to your nephew and your family. God bless you all in this tough situation.
That is my question too. Where are the parents. They should be held responsible to some extent if it was their gun.
How awful...I'm praying for your nephew and for the young lady's family. I can't imagine how hard it is going to be for everyone involved to recover from this terrible tragedy. Praying for you, too, as you step in to help your nephew. That happened here a few years back. Two friends were at the one's dad's house, but the dad was out. A gun was in the house- I forget where. Somehow the gun went off and one of them died. The blame went back and forth- the boys wrere old enough to know better, why did the dad keep the ammunition with the gun. If I'm not mistaken the mom whose son died went before Congress to get some regulations in place.
I agree totally that the kids know better. I just think that the bullets should have not been accessible. If someone is going to lock up something, they better hide the key where they can't be found and not tell the kids where the keys are or the parent should keep the key with them at all times. As with any story, we can never know exactly what happend because we weren't there. I would like to know where the parents were, if this gun was loaded to begin with, and what precautions they take to ensure these situations don't happen.
