Ok, I have a plan for next year. It is still rough though. I am looking for any opinions to help me in the study of anceint history. THis is not a time frame I am real familar with so I am not sure if the books I picked out are the best. So, if any of you have an experience with a book or can suggest another one, feel free! I have tried to find as many living books as possible but I am having a bit of trouble with that in this time period. So, most of my research was done on living book lists, Sonlight book lists, and Amazon. So bare with me...this is long. However, I am new to the classical approach so I am trying to figure this out. History: Story of the World, Vol. 1 Story of the World, Activity book Augustus Ceasar's World History bios/tales: Black Ships of Troy Tales of Ancient Egypt Bio on Alexander the Great *wanted to do one on Caesar but can't find one digestable by kids...maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Natural History: Parables from Nature Geography: The Complete Book of Marvels *I may add in Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling C. Holling. Short book but it is supposed to be great. Science: Archimedes and the Door of Science Galen and the Gateway to Medicine Made in China: Ideas and Inventions from Ancient China *I have not decided on an overall science text as of yet. Poetry and Art: Haiku by Patricia Donegan Grass Sandals: The Travels of Basho Literature: Age of Fable Julius Caesar by Shakespeare Mara, Daughter of the Nile or The Ides of April Read Alouds: The Samurai's Tale Eagle of the Ninth God King: A story in the days of King Hezekiah Free Reading List: Usborne Time Traveler Stories from the Silk Road Victory on the Walls: A Story of Nehemiah Detectives in Togas Aesop's Fables The Trojan War The Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt Tirzah *Kids will pick one book per term to read on their own. I would love to add in or delete something and add in these books but I am not sure where or if it is a good idea: 50 Famous Stories Retold Classic Myths to Read Aloud: The Great Stories of Greek and Roman Mythology Trial and Triumph (a book on church history...will only read from the time period applicable and will continue on with the rest the next year...I think..not sure...not all that familiar with the book.) I thought about doing a story out of one of these books on Fridays. Ok...that is what I have come up with. All of this will be divided into 3 terms. It seems like a lot but when divided up it isn't so bad. However, I would love some input!
Oh and I didn't forget about math or spelling. I have not picked a spelling program. I will be using Singapore for my ds and Math U See for my dd. That completes everything for the next year...I think...I hope....lol.
I'm sorry, I don't know how old your dc are. Will you be doing anything for composition and grammar? Cheryl Rebecca-14(school of the arts) homeschooling ds-12 and ds-11
yes, my kids will be doing comp and grammar. They are 8 and 10. I am still learning how to use the classical approach so I am not sure what I will use. Thanks, Tiffany! I couldn't have done it without you! This is the way I always envisioned teaching but felt I never had the time once all the textbooks and workbooks were being done. Now, I have a plan to teach how I always felt I wanted to. Thanks for the inspiration, Tiffany!
I'm going to paste this into word, play with it and shoot you a pm or email later this week. I think you made some excellent choices!
Ava, here's a link to a literature list I posted for you last year for ancient lit. BTW, I REALLY like the Archemedes book!!! Phillip enjoyed it thoroughly!!! http://www.homeschoolspot.com/showthread.php?t=5108
Can you show us here too though? Ava--MAH-velous, simply mahvelous, Dahling! Weren't you going to use Rod & Staff Grammar? That's the recommendation from Jessie Bauer and Susan Wise Bauer in The Well-Trained Mind! Go add your name to DaLynn's Classical list of people Tiffany and Ava! You two are truer classical than I am for sure!
Thanks Jackie!!!! I will be taking a look at that list and see if I need to revise! Deena: yep, I am going to use Rod and Staff grammar. I wasn't sure if I should change that but I don't think I will. Daylynn: I have not looked into God's Design...I will have to do that also. I have looked into a few things and trying to narrow it down. So, much for my easy student driven curriculum for next year! LOL. I am going to try using the CM scheduling that Tiffany is helping me with. That may still give me what I need in case I have a crazy newborn. LOL. I know my third took until after a year to disrupt homeschooling. lol. So, maybe it will be ok!
Okay, I looked at the booklist. I remember that being posted before. As you can see, I didn't take the time to read them. lol. However, I am glad to see I picked some that were already on that list...makes me feel like I am on the right track. I am going to sub out a few on my current list for ones on the living list, Jackie provided.
Your SOTW Activity book will have great lists of books to go with each chapter - it will be a great resource for you! Also, check out abookintime.com for chronological lists of books.
