We are a military family, started out homeschooling in Alaska, now we are in Georgia. Both states are very good about homeschooling IMO thus far. We went with a state program in Alaska, so we got a transcript when we left. We never had to 'show' it to anyone here in Georgia, but, we are getting ready to move again. Who knows what state we will be in.

I did a web search for transcripts but it is hard to know what each state wants. Most of you have homeschooled longer than we have--any of you move to more than one state and find that they need a certain type of transcript or something?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

I've only moved out of state once since beginning to hs, but it is a possibility that we will move again. I keep attendance, even if the state doesn't require it, and a few samples of the year's work. I also keep test scores if testing was required. I haven't kept a transcript of subjects, but I will beginning in 8th grade. I don't think that a state can do anything about what you did in another state, but I like to have some kind of records, just in case.

Our kids went to the DoD school on Ft. Campbell and then we began homeschooling when we moved to VA (duty at Ft. Monroe). We've never had to show the school dist. here anything from KY to HS in VA. We just filed our Notice of Intent and then our standardized test at the end of the year. If we did need a transcript, I would just make one. We're not req'd to use an umbrella school or correspondence program, so we don't have anything. Actually I don't give my kids letter grades on each subject and we're not req'd too in VA as long as they meet the standardized test minimums for math & lang arts. My kids tests well exceed the mins (mins are 23% and 4th stanine) so we don't have any problems with the school district.

Once you have an idea where you're headed...check out the state laws and as long as you have records (whether is transcripts or just copies of previous work) you should be fine.

My biggest concern is what the rules will be in the next state since they all vary so much. From what I am seeing the schools do not require anything until they are older. I hope that is right, but just in case I will work up a transcript. I just hope that if we move to a strict state that it is enough!

Honestly, I'd hold off on a transcript unless you already give your child(ren) grades. If they're in elementary school, the schools would be more interested in seeing the types of work they've done than a report card grade. HSLDA's website has the general info for each state. If you have an idea of the possiblities, you could check it out.

Ok sounds good. Don't they usually test them anyhow to see what grade they should be in if necessary?

we are militay also. States dont' care about what happened when you lived in another state just that you comply with their laws while you live in theirs.
It is impossible to know what each state requires and to do so on the chance that the military sends you there. relax :)

never had it happen. I suppose it could if you decided to put them in public school but generally they let you teach your child at the level you feel they are on.
