Does anyone here quilt? Have pics? Sare ideas?

Do you use fusible web? I never have used this and was wondering why I would. I am cutting squares from old clothing. I read that for each square you iron on a fusible web backing....so the fabric will not stretch I am assuming? Instructions, Information Or anything else that you would consider important for making a quilt be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I was wondering about the fusible web also. I haven't used it yet either, but there is a lot of patterns out there that call for it.
I am still really new at making quilts, I am not the best by all means. I tried doing all of the fancy shapes and all of that and realized I needed more experience first. I have been making just simple squares for now. (my machine died the other day, so I need to find a new one soon.)

I love quilts but don't have time to work on them right now. I have only made one large one and some baby quilts. If I can get Katie to make pictures for me I will put them on soon. Quiltmaker magazine is my favorite Quilt magaizine because their instructions are easy for me to follow.

I've never used any kind of pattern for my quilts. I just measure, cut and sew.

Though this is the first memory quilt or quilt made of baby clothing that I am making. The fabrics are all different and I was wondering about the fusible web for the stretchy pieces. Maybe if that is on the back they won't stretch? Though later after it's been washed will it come off and eventually stretch?

Oh, I WISH I had the time!!! For a while, I had friends coming over one Friday a month to work on quilts, but that fizzled out. I have a Sampler Quilt I've been working on since BEFORE I WAS MARRIED, lol! Haven't touched it for quite a long time!!! I finished a baby blanket for Phillip, but he lost it. I'm hoping maybe we'll find it when we open up the camper this spring! I also had a small baby-size top finished. Rachael actually did the quilting on that a few years past. Anyone remember Jimmy Lu, who use to be on here a few years back? Her daughter was trying to piece together a quilt, with a square from each state. Rachael donated an Ohio Star from Ohio!

I love to quilt! I am not super experienced, though. I have made 4 quilts. The last one I just finished for my daughter's bd. I used the friendship star block with reproduction fabrics. We also got her a DS. (big splurge!) The other day, for her journaling, I had her write "My favorite birthday gift is..." She surprised me by finishing it with "the quilt my mom made for me." That made my day! I was sure she would say the DS. To me, quilting is right up there with scrapbooking - something really special for your family. I have thought often of making a memory quilt someday like the one you are doing, Nellie. But I haven't yet. And aside from some clothes sewing, I haven't used fusible web. I am assuming what you are - that it is to keep the fabric from stretching. Do you have a local quilt shop? I know that the ones I have visited have been very helpful - they could prob tell you over the phone what it is for and suggest a brand also. If you don't have one, let me know and I will call the one near me for you! Good luck! I will try to post a picture later when I am home. ~Jessica

Would anyone be interested in a "charm exchange"? We did this at another site I was a member of. Each person prepares a certain number (say 10) of 6" square of material for the other people. So if there were six people involved, you would prepare five-lock bags, each with 10 6" squares in it. (Five, because the sixth person is yourself). You send this to the hostess, along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope. The hostess then gets all the bags from each individual, puts one from each person in the envelope you sent, and you will get in the mail a package that has five different bags, each with 10 different squares.

That sounds interesting. I'd be game. Does we set a theme or color scheme for the fabric? (ie - batiks, floral or pastels, jewel?)

When I did it before, there was no theme or anything. I got quite a variety of stuff, and am (very slowly) putting them together. I put two right-sides together, sew all around the perimeter, and then cut them into fourths diagonal. Then I got four identical squares of two triangles. So eventually, it will be a type of Scrap Quilt.

JessaMae- Unfortunately, no. No answer to my question. We really dont' have a quilting store around here. I haven't even started the quilt. Though I have a large pile of clothing ready to be cut. Their is a lot of stretchy stuff, because it's infant/toddler clothing. I am wondering if I should use the fusible web or not. I don't want it to fall apart later but then I don't want one square that is really stretchy...I'd think that would look odd. Because of the stretchy materials it has put me to a halt and I have no idea where to start...ugh.

The exchange sounds fun, but I must opt out. With this quilt looming over me...along with several other projects...I just can't do it.

Nellie - we have a quilting store here and also a great sewing store. I will try to call them tomorrow or in the next few days and see if I can get an answer for you! :) ~Jess

I'm not for sure but I think the fusable web is a stablizer for the stretchy stuff. I have made 5 quilts. One was a baby quilt,2 twin size quilts, and two throw quilts made from recycled jeans. I'll get hubby to help me post pictures.

I've never quilted on anything but cotton, and it's rare that I use blends, so I know nothing about "stretchy" stuff. But I would guess the fusable stuff would work.
