I'm planning for next year (10th grade) and need help for some subjects I just have no clue what to use.

    We've already picked these:
    Engl: Vocab for Classical Roots
    Math: Scott Foresman Geometry
Hist: Notgrass World History (2nd bk, 1/2 credit)
    Elec: BJU French 2
Elec: Artistic Pursuits, Bk 2 Color Study (1/2 credit)

    NEED:
Engl: something grammar and writing. We've tried Easy Grammar. Too easy. We've tried Writing strands and Jensen's Format Writing, both for writing. Not our cup of tea.
Science: Ecology. I have no clue what to use for this.
Hist: Civics/Govt. (1/2 credit), I'm looking at Notgrass' program but need other suggestions
    Elec: Photography (1/2 credit)

    HELP!

Having no high schoolers (and won't for a while), and only going on what I've seen from others whom I trust - what you have looks great!

I'll still put in a word for Rod&Staff's English program. It only goes to level 10 (thinking of them more as levels than grades is helpful), and levels 9 and 10 center mostly around writing with some grammar review mixed in. I know that some people take 2 years to go through each of these books. (So, level 9 for grades 9 and 10, and level 10 for grades 11 and 12.) I also know that others who are only starting with R&S for high school have started at level 7 and used one book per year through graduation. For what it's worth.

Civics/govt I've no clue about, sorry!

For photography, just a thought, but if there's a college near you (community or otherwise) they usually offer 'continuing education' classes through the summer. Several of those would involve photography classes. I just got the catalog for UT's summer classes in the mail this week, so I'd bet it's not too late. Or, if you'd rather, they may have a full semester course in the fall that a high schooler could take.

Just some thoughts from someone who's oldest is only 9. LOL

    ETA link for R&S samples.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm looking into these. Anyone else have any ideas? I think we're flipping to Chemistry first before the Ecology.

For Chemistry you could look at Spectrum Chemistry. I'm trying to sell some of my curriculum stuff I'm not using anymore so I can afford this for my ds14 for next year! If I do get this Chem. I'll also get the Bridges Math (a short course) for him to do before we start the Chem.

I also like the R&S. You could even get a Level 7 or 8 R&S Grammar book for the Grammar (skip the writing), and a 9/10 level for the writing. I haven't seen the 9/10 books, so I'm not sure exactly how they're laid out, I just know what I've heard---that they focus on writing way more than grammar.

I was going to suggest Notgrass Govt., since that's what I'm planning on using, so I'm not much help there.

What about "shop" or something like that? I had my son do some homerepair stuff. It worked out great!

Looks like you have some great curriculum so far! Nice set-up!

We recently started IEW for writing. It has levels for elementary thru high school.

My kiddos are younger but Writing Strands wasn't a good fit for us either....level 2, 3 and eval book are on the shelf collecting dust

HSLDA has constitutional law classes that might work for civics/gov. I think they're online...can't remember exactly since mine are younger.

Try to get a Warriners grammar book. These are very too the point. Good explanations. tons of exercises. I use these in school. They are older books which is a plus IMO. there is a first thru fifth edition. first is for 6th second edition 7th grade and so on.

My daughter will be in 10th grade next year, also. I would recommend Apologia for science. We are using Saxon Algebra 2, 2nd half of Exploring American History(Notgrass) and some electives. I need to find a good writing program also. So, I am interested in the replies to your post. Have a great day!

highlighted what I was gonna talk about.. There is Liberty by PBS a program you can rent from Net FLix , it teaches on the foundations of America up to the COnstitution etc. We are going through that as both Gov/Civ and ds US HISTORY , I am making dd watch all of it and answer questions verbally on it. Ds watches some gets teh gest of it as he will learn all over again in a few years.
