Has anyone used this program for phonics/reading? If so I was wondering if the writing sounds part was really necessary...the boys are doing a different handwriting program and I'm afraid that they will become confused about how they are supposed to write and also the reading program introduces letters that they aren't ready to be writing in the other program yet. So I'm just curious as to whether or not we really have to do the writing exercises.
I haven't done this. I did look at it, and decided that it wouldn't work for us. I've heard that a lot of people choose not to do it because of all of the extra symbols, etc, it requires learning. I don't know if anyone has used it and didn't like it because of those things, or if anyone has used it without those things. I'm helpful, eh? Have you looked at The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading?
No we haven't looked at that, we are liking the lessons, and the extra characters don't bother us. The only thing we aren't liking is the writing sounds part...so I'd like to leave that out but I don't know if doing that will cause problems later for the lessons.....The symbols to us make sense once you look at them and to us it seems to make reading easier I'm just not happy with the writing sounds part.
I have both mentioned. Of course different kids different programs. Anyhoo I just started 100 Easy Lessons with my son and don't do the writing part. There are some writing sheets you can print out from www.donnayoung.com (I think that's right) for writing. I am just happy he's sitting with me doing the lessons. He just started to write and I don't plan on pushing it quite yet. My oldest didn't start writing until after 5. Then I am going to have him write from A Reason For Handwriting just like his sister uses.
We didnt use it either. We used Hooked On Phonics (the old one) and the new Hooked on Phonics master reader. We are almost done with Master Reader but its starting to get too advanced, I think we will wait until next year to finish the lessons.
Hi. I used it for the first, maybe, 35-40 lessons. The handwriting is not too cumbersome. I do think, though, that the handwriting lessons are important to the program (if you read the full introduction). I think it's part of the method in helping them make the brain connection for reading. Also, www.donnayoung.org has a companion to it for free which covers the handwriting lessons easily. Probably if I had had that, it would have worked a little easier for my daughter! Never even tried with my son, well...he taught himself how to read...so who needs Mom? HUH? Anyway...I know many who have used it and love it!
I used it! I used this book for my three oldest. (Will start it this fall for my youngest!) My mom showed me the book 10 years ago, and I thought, "NO way! That looks too confusing." Well, guess what. It wasn't. I loved it. I took us about 10 minutes a day, and all my kids were reading at a second grade level in three short months. I recommend this book to everyone! Hope that helps! Oh, and you can get it from Walmart online for around $13. Tara
We loved 100 Easy Lessons, we used the writing lessons for the first few lessons and mine are both reading wonderfully! I would not use anything else I think they learned just fine without the writing lessons.
I used it without the writing exercises and it went fine for us. I was using other curriculum and had trouble. 100 Easy was a correction measure for us, and we used other stuff to teach writing after we finished 100 EAsy. I used it successfully with the first child, but we had a bit of a stopping point a little before half way through and used Bob Books from the library for a while then proceeded further. I was talking with another homeschooler last night and she experienced the same thing and used Bob Books also.
That is so good to hear, we'll be continuing with the program minus the writing now. I think it will go much better because the boys won't be so confused. They are doing great with the sounds part. We even wrote the sounds out on index cards and put them up on the wall then we ask the boys throughout the day to say the sounds and they are doing great.
