Okay over on another board a lady wrote to Subway about this and this is here response she got http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29479&highlight=subway Now after reading this I am a "little" less mad, and kind of understand their side, but I am glad that they will try to include hslers in other contests.
I think I would encourage you all to enter the contest as a private school, after all thats what my kids are registered as, a private school...
Ha! You are right Shawna! The competition would be tooooo stiff if they had to go against home schoolers.
I think all hs-ers should write them just to let them know that our kids should not be excluded because we have chosen to give our kids a quality education at our own expense.
Many states do not categorize home schoolers as private schools. Missouri is one of them. Besides, if any of us were to "win", we'd be disqualified since the terms were crystal clear about home schoolers entering. I did write an e-letter about the situation. I understand the point of the contest (as per the explanation that was given in response to one mom's letter), but I still don't believe they did the right thing. I will no longer be giving my business to such a place. And sadly, I've been eating there twice a week on my lunch hour since it's walking distance from work. *sigh* The price we pay for having convictions. lol.
Ditto! I feel it is disrespectful to dismiss homeschoolers and not acknowledge their education as counting. So, if my kids don't count then they don't need my $$.
I think most homeschoolers would take a little bit of the equipment from their winnings and share the rest with charity or their local school.
What I suggested in my letter to the company was that the home schooler who won should have been given a gym membership for his family and the equipment would go to the school district in which he resides. That way the company is still accomplishing the goal of giving the stuff to a school without excluding home schoolers.
I understand the other viewpoints being expressed here...chances are the folks at Subway who came up with this thing just didn't think in-depth about the homeschooler issue. I just hope that y'all realize my previous post in this thread was an attempt at humor, and not something that I would actually submit!
That letter is signed by the scholastic company representative...so I would guess it's a scholastic response and not a subway one.
I sent letters to both companies and signed the petition. I am glad to see others signing it as this morning their were only 48 and now their are something like 148.
I signed it. Now maybe we should all start contacting Scholastic . I wonder if they realize alot of their business comes from homeschoolers who buy their books? I found this really aggravating, I understand the playground equipment issue, but as someone said, they could have offered a smaller playground equipment prize for a homeschooler. Well, Subway lost my business, and so did Scholastic. Sad, because we buy alot of their storybooks. If they don't consider homeschooling a legitimate education, then they don't deserve our business! Blessings, Dianna
I'm not signing it YET. I think they wanted the prize to help a SCHOOL, not an individual family. Someone realized that if they didn't exclude HS'ers, it could very well be going to a family. So they made the poor decision of just excluding us, rather than figuring out how to make it work. I doubt they'll do THAT again!!! So now I'm waiting to see what they're going to do about it. That will determine whether or not I sign a petition. I'm also concerned that, if every time a corporation tries to do something for a SCHOOL, if we get upset they might find it easier to stop altogether, rather than try to accomodate EVERYONE. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, I use to teach handicapped children. But there are some field trips that kids in wheelchairs simply CANNOT go on. So now no children in the district are permitted to take these field trips, irregardless of whether there are handicapped kids in that class or not. And I'm afraid corporate America will simply stop giving, rather than figure out how to avoid offending every single person out there.
I have very mixed feelings about this one. First of all its not good to not include some people and include others. We all are equal no matter who we are or what we do, or how we live. I believe there are many ways this could of been worked out. Like they should of opened it up to everyone and if a hser won he or she got 5000 dollars in scholarship or something along that line. I don't feel they did it right and yes I will boycot them for it. We all are equal homeschool or not.
Now that homeschoolers are making a stink, perhaps Subway will alter the rules and awards for their next contest.
