Are any of you planning to study the Olympics?

We are going to, since we watch so much of it and enjoy it. So i have decided they will each make their own lapbook - a double one on China & Olympics. My basic plan is to have them do all the research and design their own lapbooks. Here is what we will include:

    China
    • Map & flag
    • Areas in China/provinces/states
    • Government
    • Myths
    • Music
    • History
    • Climate
    • Animals
    • Controversy & human rights
    • Population
    • Make a Chinese silhouette
    • Chinese inventions/discoveries
    • The great wall
    • Create a postcard and write a letter on the back to send home (imagine you are there)
    • Currency
    • Language
    Olympics
    • Ancient Olympics
    • Modern Olympics
    • Summer Olympic Sports
    • Symbols and traditions
    • Olympic oath
    • Olympic flag
    • Official mascots & their meanings
    • Countries participating & flags
    • Countries that have hosted the modern Olympics (map)
    • Medal tally
    • Drugs in sport
    • Which were the first Olympics to be televised?
    • Women’s history
    • Which games were cancelled?
    • How many Olympics has Australia participated in?
    • Profile of 3 Australian athletes
    • Make a facts chart of your favourite Olympic Games Sport
    • Add 3 Olympic games to timeline folder and at least 3 important details about each
    • Collect a selection of photographs that depict the essence of the Olympic Games
    • Australia’s Olympic hall of fame

We will also be doing an "adventure with writing sensory journey in Asia" that I bought. We may also join with friends for an opening ceremony party.

    Any other suggestions?

What, if anything, are you doing? Do the Olympics fall in the middle of your summer holidays?

We are doing something very similar to you.
We starting brainstorming about it last night, so will let you know what else we come up with.

My sister (who is a travel agent in Oz), and her partner, are travelling to China for the Olympics.

They are huge fans of the Olympics and have been to a few (+ Commonwealth Games etc)

She will be sending us lots of pics (+ she is writing for a travel mag while there)
They are also doing voluntary work at a Panda Sanctuary while in China.

They are counting down the sleeps now !!!

Yes, we'll be studying them also. We studied the winter olympics the last time around also, so this will round out the sports info for us.

We won't be studying the olympics, but the boys and I will watch them and probably talk about some of the things we see. Like the different flags, and maybe some customs and things like that. I don't know if there's anything else we can or will do or not since my boys are so young.

I've pondered doing this as "fun" in the summer. We've just started summer break (spent the day at the Water Country USA getting burned today to kick it off with DH who had the day off).....anyway, I haven't finalized anything but I think the kids would enjoy it. I need to check out the Olympics website to figure out when they start, which sports we'll watch (so we can discuss them beforehand)....my girls & I are going on a girl scout trip for a week in mid-Aug.....I better we're gonna miss some "must-see" events.

We are considering working loosely on the Olympics lapbook that was on sale at currclick. I think it will be a fun and interesting study - but we are not going into the level of detail that you are. I look forward to hearing about all that you learn!

Wow what a great idea! We have just watched current events on the Country , and how even with the earthquake they are going through with the events! That is amazing! A lot of countries would have stopped it.
We studied the olympics back when ds16 was like 6 yrs old, but now is a good time to do it again, thank you for all the informative suggestions you gave me in your post! What a great idea! I am going to use the olympics not only for school but for a theme for ds10's birthday this year! Weee!

    Summer 2008 Olympics

    Hello!!

I'm new here, but just wanted to jump on this thread because I'm excited about it. :p We're going to be studying the Olympics starting in July, so I've been researching material for our unit. I found 2 great items that might be of help to those of you that will be doing a Summer 2008 Olympics unit as well.

The first comes from The Official Website of the Olympic Movement. I don't think I'm allowed to post the link yet because I'm new. It's at Olympic Org in the education section. It's a complete study guide for schools for pupils ages 8-16. The guide is actually for the temporary exhibit, but is full of great material!!

The second item is an Olympic lapbook. All the materials to put in the lapbook and expanded ideas are available. It can be found at Homeschool Share.

I was really interested in this because it not only does a study on China, but the student picks out a team to keep track of during the Olympics. You can then expand the lesson into learning more about that country and creating a lapbook for that country as well.

Once again, I hope this is useful information. I truly hope I haven't broken any rules by posting this. :?: If anyone does this activity, please share how it goes!!

Welcome!! Glad to see another Army Wife on the board (there are a few of us military folks here). I've seen the site you mentioned recently and agree that it's very helpful. Sadly, my girls and I are gonna miss part of the Olympics due to a week long Girl Scout field trip to PA.

No worries...you haven't broken any rules (not like you were telling us of a site where you're selling things) and hang around a bit and you'll hit 50 posts and be free to post all the helpful links that we can handle

Thanks!! I'm glad to be here. Don't worry....I plan to stick around. I'm not only new to this forum, but we're new to homeschooling as well. We tried public and private schools and they just didn't work. Now we've come right back around to my original choice. It just took awhile to convince the man of that!!

Always glad to see other Army folks around!! We're at the end of our career. Terminal leave starts the end of the year. I can't say that we're not ready!! LOL It's all good though!!

Hey, we're new to homeschooling...started last March when the Army moved us to VA. My hubby has over 20 years but just got another promotion so we're holding off retiring to see if we can stay around another 2 years to keep it for pay (you know how that is).....but if they try to send him back to the "sandbox" again...we'll retire instead. He's been gone WAY TOO MUCH in the last 5 years.

Anyway, our kids have only attended the DoD school at Ft. Campbell. I always pondered HSing with every move but the kids were never school age until KY and then Daddy was gone almost the entire time. We're enjoying it and plan to continue indefinitely at this point.

Hop on over and intro yourself in the intro section so the others can get to know you!

    Memory Verses for the Olympics

I can only think of one offhand right now. I'll look up some more for you though. What age group are you looking for verses and activities??

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. - I Corinthians 9:24

    1 Peter 5:5b
"...And all of you, serve each other in humility, for 'God opposes the proud, but favors the humble.'" (NLT)

    Ecclesiastes 9:10
"Whatever you do, do well." (NLT)

    James 1:2-3
"Dear brothers and sisters, when trouble comes your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow." (NLT)

Kids Sundsy School Place has "Memory Verse Basketball" and "Red Light, Green Light Obstacle Course". Those might be a fun Olympic activities. Memory Verse Relay. Divide your class into two teams. Make yourself and one other person a team captain. The first child in each line must run up to their team captain and say the memory verse. If the captain says, "yes," because the memory verse was correct, that player runs back, tags the next person in line, and goes to sit down. If the captain says, "no," because the verse was incorrect, that player must go back, tag the next person in line, and get into the back of the line to try again. The first team with no players standing wins. (That was found at Suite 101, but don't remember where.) One last item, Bogard Press has a VBS kit Welcome to the Race. I haven't been able to check it out at all. I just saw it mentioned someplace. They might have some freebies or ideas for you. I'll see what else I can find.
