Hello, that was a long title but I wanted to make sure and get the right peoples attention. We need to teach our kids these things especially with summer here and all the fun hikes and bike rides we have planned and swimming, who knows what we will come across. So where do you go for training? How do you find one in your area do you just bug the Fire Men and ask them about it? I would think I could get a few people I know to join us if I need to get a small group of about 8-10?
Yes we checked with the red cross but they want a 100 dollars a kids to do the program down here. Thats for the babysitting one. They learn CPR and all. WoW is what I said...
Check with your local fire department or EMT's. When I used to teach I needed to have CPR training and they were the ones who taught us. Also, your local parks and recreation department may have a program available for kids.
I did my first aid, CPR and AED training through our hospital. They have a class open several times a year. Our kids also get a certain degree of training from Scouts.
My Dd's took the Red Cross babysitting class. It was done with our co-op. They must have given a group discount or something because we paid $20 per kid. We also have a couple part time nurses at our co-op that teach health and related issues.
I checked into the babysitting class a few years ago for Rachael. It was $50 through the Red Cross, I had to take her to Downtown Columbus, and be sure to send a packed lunch. A friend suggested the Children's Hospital. They cost $25, offered it in several of the subburbs, and included pizza for lunch. I've since learned that many hospitals offer it.
Jackie, thanks so much never thought checking there, do they just do CPR or do they do the babysitting thing...
I can't say for sure, but I can't imagine them NOT having CPR! Only, I doubt they would have it specifically for kids; you would probably have to enroll them into an adult class. I had talked with the guy who runs the rec center where Rachael refs soccer. He said they tried to get the Red Cross to come and give it, but it didn't work AT ALL. The Red Cross wanted to charge a whole lot, they finally got them talked down to something reasonable, and then the lady didn't show up!
k, I will check with our local boys and girls club, have to go to pick up thier JR Giants forms there anyway, and then we will pop over to the Fire station when we go to Earth Day at our local park too its right next door. My kids love the earthday celebration ( I know its not the time of year for Earth Day but the park has itsown schedule hehe , they have freebies and usually a juggling or some sort of fun stuff show that kids get to get in volved in. They can't wait!
HeartSavers offers classes here, but they are only in Arizona I think, try googling cpr and your city together and see what comes up. You may find one for very cheap that's local to you.
OK, I checked. Children's Hosptial in Columbus has a CPR class for $35. Several are held in the suburbs, others are at the main hospital downtown. You must be 11 or older to attend. Another interesting note is as follows (quote): Class is specifically for lay people. This class is not intended for health care professionals or child care providers. (unquote) I find it interesting that this is not for child care providers. Are child care providers REQUIRED to have CPR? I know teachers aren't, though it was offered to teachers at my school. I can't remember if they charged us for it or not. With our special needs children, it was strongly encouraged, though my school was the only one in the district that had a full-time nurse.
We had a group that once a year does a free thing at our mall for teenagers--just the CPR part. It's about 4 hours long, and they get a certificate. My ds14 did that this year and enjoyed it!
When I worked in a day care setting 50% of the teachers were required to have CPR training. That meant one from each class. However, since my boss was covering the cost, most of the teacher went. I lost my certification years ago as I did not renew it, but I feel confident that if I had to perform it that I still know what to do.
