Well, I think I jumped the gun... I loved the A Beka K curriculum so much, that I ran out and bought the ABeka 1st grade curriculum mid way through our studies (we started in January). My dd struggles with academics, and as we work through the K curriculum, I'm thinking that the 1st grade one is not going to be the best fit. BY CHANCE, is there anyone out there that would be in the market for the full 1st grade (child kit and parent kit) ABeka kit?? We paid $344.39 with tax, but the kits before tax are $324.90 and I would let them go for that. They are out of the plastic shrink wrap otherwise, I'd try to return them to the company. Now, that being said, anyone have suggestions for a struggling 1st grader?
What exactly is she struggling with....math, learning to read, wiggliness, ??? That would help for suggestions. I haven't used Abeka for 1st grade (except history). I have used it some for 2nd and 4th (both English/grammar type things). Looking at the phonics recently (just curious about it because it gets such great reviews here and other places), I quickly realized that it would not have been a good fit for my son. He thinks more in work families and we're using Hooked on Phonics for now. For example, Abeka does short a as ra-t, sa-t, ma-t. My son doesn't think quite that way and does better with -at families. So he does better with r-at, s-at, m-at. Now maybe if we had started with Abeka it would be different, I don't know. I had planned to use the Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading but he liked HOP (and I had it too)....he's done better than I expected so far (but struggles with sight words). So if you can maybe give us a hint as to what aspect she's struggling with , that would help. And honestly, maybe she's just not quite ready for certain concepts and lots of seatwork. We do my son's 3 R's in 10-15 bursts with LARGE breaks in between. So he does math...big break.....phonics.....break.....handwriting....etc. Rhonda
My dd struggles with the large amounts of seatwork that ABeka has. She is ADHD and even though we take a break after each subject or workbook, she struggles and tries to rush through her work to get it done. I don't think she's concentrating on what she's writing and not really grasping the full learning concept. Don't get me wrong, I think the ABeka curriculum is awesome and very comprehensive. I'm hoping once we get her academics up to speed, she will be able to jump back into it in another year or so.
Honestly, my son doesn't have ADHD and I don't think he'd so well with Abeka either. As you said, Abeka's not a "bad" curriculum and its comprehensive but its not for everyone every year (jmho). We dumped the 2nd grade LA worktext after 24 pages of Capitalization of the beginning word of a sentence and adding a period. My daughter was so bored and her hand hurt. More important she needed a different tempo. She needed to learn more with LOTS less repetition....so she did a Spectrum LA 2 workbook for Barnes & Noble this year. She'll do Rod & Staff English this coming year. My 4th grader did all of her Abeka Lang A worktext but really dislikes it and begged for a change. She admits that she learned ALOT from it but it was too much busy-work....so she's going to try Rod & Staff too. I think I could have done a better job of cutting down the exercises but with 3 to school, honestly I didn't always realize that it was too much "busy-work" all the time. The same daughter who didn't like the 2nd grade LA...LOVES the Abeka History readers. Last year she read 1st and 2nd grade for "fun". She's already started the 3rd grade one and she's really not a history kid.....so we're still using Abeka here and there for that and health and a few other supplements. You might post a new thread asking for suggestions. Many folks won't see it if they aren't looking for 1st grade curriculum.
Hello! Just wondering if you still have your 1st grade cirriculum? If so, are you willing to go down on your price a bit?
Is there a way to find out? I am new to this site and can not seem to figure out how to email. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
