I was just at the grocery store and a lady there had her little girl (about age 6) with her. I know the lady really just in passing. She had quite an inquisitive child, the little girls asks:

    Do I know you?
Okay, I know you, I remember now.

Are you wearing stockings, your legs are tan?

:eek:Why aren't you fat like my mommy?

:eek:My mommy eats too much candy and drinks too much pop that is why she is fat and has a big b*tt!
I said, "Maybe you shouldn't say unkind things about your mommy".
She responds, "Oh she's used to it, she's been fat a long time".

My mommy just lost 11 teeth cuz she used lots of drugs.

How old are you, you can't be that old, maybe 30?

    Do you smoke?

    Do you use drugs too?

Okay this is an awkward situation and the mom is just smiling away and I am trying to get my groceries bought and paid for so I don't have to hear anymore stuff.

    Wow!
    Shocked!

WOW! That was quite an earful of information. I hate those situations where you find out info you really did not want to hear!

Can you imagine what that mom must be subjected to, in order to stand there and take that? She must have less than no self esteem. Me- I'd have been frank with Little Slimmy, and told her you will not discuss these things with her because they are not appropriate things to talk about. I'd have further informed her- sternly- it is never okay to talk badly about your mother!

Well, as the mother of an extremely talkative and precocious six-year-old, I can feel for this mom!

Mine just embarrassed me in front of my dad and sister by asking if I was on a diet, if I hoped that one day I'd lose some weight? And, did I hope that I'd get as skinny as I was as a teenager because back then, I looked like Aunt N____ and he likes the way she looks better.

Coulda smacked the lil' booger, that's for sure!

DH and I just talked about what we need to say to him about this. I think kids like him just blurt out whatever they're thinking, and it takes a lot of hard work to train them not to be so blunt. (Then you have my oldest, who avoids talking to strangers so much that's it's another kind of rude!)

I've had this discussion with him a few times before when he's made comments about my weight. I tell him that people come in all shapes and sizes, and we need to love and respect them all. I would be mortified if he ever commented on someone else's weight like that!

Tonight, I told him that eating healthy food and exercising is important, and if I lose weight, fine, if not, that's OK too. And that since I'm nearly 40, no, I will probably never look like I looked as a teenager again.

He's also commented on my mom's wrinkles, and my dad's gray hair, and one time told me that a child at our church (who sadly, was born with a severe facial deformation) made him want to throw up. :( I could not seem to convince him that this child was just like him inside and we shouldn't treat people differently because of how they look.

He does NOT hear this stuff from us, so I have no idea where it comes from. TV, I suppose, or overhearing adults talking about how they need to lose weight all the time.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say that kids like that can be really hard to shut up, though it sounds like that mom didn't even try. Believe me, I do all I can to teach Eli discretion and respect, but he's a tough one!

I am sorry your dd said that to you. Sometimes kids just let what ever they are thinking come out of their mouth.

This mom seemed to be amused by her daughter's lack of respect or perhaps she saw it as being cute or witty, but her reaction and laughing seemed to encourage their girl's behavior further.

The little girl also asked if I worked and I said, "No, but my dh works". The little girl said, "Wow neat, cuz we're on welfare".

Whoa! That's crazy. "we're on welfare." I wouldn't want my child to say it, almost like they're proud. I'd be doing whatever we needed, to get out of that situation. I guess the drugs are more important. It's like when people think it's funny/cute to hear their child say things like, "sh*t, F word, and others."

At the pediatrician the other day my 5 yo had to get antibiotics, the doctor said, "drugs" and my 3 yo said, "OOOOHHHH!!! BAAADDDDD YOU SAID DRUGS!!! MOM HIM BAD!!" It was kind of funny, but embarrasing too, we've obviously told them about drugs (lots of family members) but I guess we forgot about the "good" drugs.

    ARGGG!! Even more useful information!!

I'm sure all of us have been in an embarrassing situation with our kids' choice of words. The key is to address it and right then, if at all possible.

I believe, too, that kids will repeat what they hear. Since I'm plus sized and know it, I don't obsess out loud about it, and never have. My son is also obese, but I don't carry on about his weight, either. By doing that, Jeannie never picked up the words 'fat', 'heavy', 'diet', or any of those words that hang over a heavy person's head. I'm pretty sure she doesn't even regard someone by their size like most kids would, just because she hasn't heard the usual terms and whatnot. It's the same with looks. I didn't want her developing the usual issues girls get, so I have been careful what I grouse out loud about.
I do talk about trying to exercise as often as possible, but in a health sense, not as in I need to lose weight. I talk about foods in the same way, if that makes sense.

    How about this one.....

"Daddy chews on Mommy's neck all the time and leaves black and blue marks....." Told to me when I was teaching preschool by a 3yo! (The director said, "And that's true, because I've seen them!!!" Meaning the marks, not Mommy and Daddy doing it!)
