Do any of you healthy, aerobic, and at a healthy weight people, I know my sentence is not correct , have skin tags? Handsome has a lot under his arms. He just returned from the dermatologist. The dermatologist looked at his armpits and said, "Well, you certainly have yourself quite a crop, don't you?" LOL, LOL, LOL!!!!! Handsome has so many that his armpits looked rippled. Anyways, Handsome asked what causes them and the doctor said he does not really know but he can say that he has never seen them on healthy people. He only sees them on people who are over weight or do not eat right. Now that I think about it, I have never noticed them on healthy people either. So the dermatologist couldn't remove all of them. He cut them off instead and then burned the hole shut. He said this will keep them from coming back in the same spot. Last time a dermatologist burned them off and they came right back threefold. It was as though the doctor sprinkled them with fertilizer. Anyways, I am just wondering!
Hmmmm....not sure about your doctors comment. Patty, My doctor told me that a skin tag is when something continually rubs on your skin. My skin tag was from my bra strap rubbing on my shoulder in one certain spot and over the years it kept getting bigger, so I asked to have it cut off. It has never returned and I've never had any others. I copied some information I found online. Read the last paragraph I highlighted. I'm not so sure about your doctors comment. What is a skin tag? A skin tag is a common, acquired benign skin growth that looks like a small piece of hanging skin. Skin tags are often described as bits of skin- or flesh-colored tissue that projects from the surrounding skin from a small, narrow stalk. They typically occur in characteristic locations including the neck, underarms, eyelids, and under the breasts (especially where underwire bras rub directly beneath the breasts). Although skin tags may vary somewhat in appearance, they are usually smooth or slightly wrinkled and irregular, flesh-colored or slightly more brown, and hang from the skin by a small stalk. Early or beginning skin tags may be as small as a flattened pinpoint-sized bump around the neck. Some skin tags may be as large as a big grape. Where do skin tags occur? Skin tags can occur almost anywhere there is skin. However, favorite areas for tags are the eyelids, neck, armpits, upper chest (particularly under the female breasts), and groin folds. Tags are typically thought to occur in characteristic locations where skin rubs against skin or clothing. Who tends to get skin tags? Nearly half of the population is reported to have skin tags at some time. Although tags are generally acquired (not present at birth) and may occur in anyone, more often they arise in adulthood. They are much more common in middle age and they tend to increase in prevalence up to age 60. Children and toddlers may also develop skin tags in the underarm and neck areas. Since they are thought to arise more readily in areas of skin friction or rubbing, tags are also more common in overweight people. Hormone elevations, such as those seen during pregnancy, may cause an increase in the formation of skin tags, as skin tags are more frequent in pregnant women. Tags may be easily removed during or after pregnancy. Skin tags are a benign condition and not directly associated with any other major medical conditions, since tags are commonly found on healthy people. http://www.medicinenet.com/skin_tag/article.htm
I had one under where my bra hits too and I wear an underwire. It was small but it must have fallen off. ROFL Doesn't that sound gross? I saw a lady with a bunch on her neck, poor thing, it looked like a skin tag garden. I tried not to look at her neck but my curiosity got the better of me. Poor thing!
Thanks for the information. My friend and her son have skin tags in areas that do not have a lot of friction. But it makes sense that they occur more often where there is friction. I have a small one on the right front of my neck. There isn't friction there either but I think it grew when I was pregnant with Ems. The hormone changes makes a lot of sense.
My dh has several. I have one that grew while I was pregnant. I wouldn't say that either of us are unhealthy, but both of us could stand to lose a few pounds.
I do not know if people still do this but my mom and her friend, both had skin tags, would tie string around them to stop the blood flow to them. Eventually they would dry up and fall off. I always found this odd. I remember my mom walking around with string on her arms and neck.LOL LOL
I didn't have any until I had kids. Now I have three, one for each dd huh? They don't bother me much. The hormone thing makes the most sense to me.
I got a few when I was pregnant...each time. The doctor told me it's a common side-effect of pregnancy. I'm not a skinny minny, but I'm not overweight either.
I'm fairly healthy and have had a few. I've noticed some growing on my eyes too, which upsets me cause I think they are gross and would have to pay to have them removed. Kristine
If you wear a necklace that can cause them as well. My hubby had a couple on the back on neck because of a rope necklace he wore. Had them removed & doesn't wear the necklace.
I do not wear jewelry. Neither does my friend or her son. I am coming to the conclusion that some people get them and some people don't, regardless of weight, health, or friction. The pregnancy idea makes the most sense. At least for me and my skin tag. Handsome on the other hand is another story. I don't think he's ever been pregnant!LOL
Both DH and I have them (also DD was born with one!) I have a couple where my bra straps sit, and some where the wires are (these grew in my last pregnancy). DH has them under his arms. We aren't exactly fit, maybe slightly overweight..but eat well (apart form the chocolate !)
I have read, heard and noticed that skin tags tend to show up on folks about the time that they start to gain weight. The things that many folks have around the eyes are not the same as skin tags and tend to be from viruses. I have the things near my eyes, but not the larger sking tags with the thin stalks. I need to watch what I eat better and loose some weight, it will be interesting to see if they clear up or if quit getting new ones after that. So far they are in the begining and are not bad, but I know where it can go and dont want to go there.
I have one under my arm, and it has been there for as long as I can remember. Even as a small child I can remember having it. I think I am a healthy person, I suppose that is just a part of my arm that rubs on my clothes.
I am thin. I exercise 6 days a week and eat very healthy (lots of home grown organic produce from our garden, rarely eat out...) In fact, at the last complete physical I had in April, the nurse said she hadn't seen anyone as healthy as me in a long time. I have had a few tags taken off...so I don't think you have to be fat and/or unhealthy to have them. My mom has alot and she is also thin and eats well (but doesn't exercise much.) Maybe it's partly hereditary?
I developed a few when pregnant. They're so tiny you can hardly see them. I've always been thin, and very healthy, so I tend to lean more towards the hereditary possibility.
This is gross but when I got them when I was pregnant, I just took a small pair of scissors and cut them off.
