Hello! My daughter is currently in 1st grade, getting ready for 2nd. She is only 6, and is already one grade level ahead. She flew through K-5, but has struggled just a little with the Abeka grade 1. I do not want to hold her back, since she is about 1/2 way through the year already. But, I don't want to push either. Is there an easier curriculum??? I know some are more advanced than others. What are some of the not so advanced??? Thanks so much!!!!
My Father's World is a little less advanced. you can see their program at their website.. www.mfwbooks.com
Okay, I read your post wrong so I have to reread and repost! Christian Liberty Press has a decent curriculum. We've been more eclectic and use stuff from different curriculums to go with where my children are at at any given point in time.
If she's workbook oriented, I found Alpha Omega Lifepacs to be very easy for my daughter when she did them. I think they are a laid back approach. My daughter liked them b/c she like working independently on some things... Check out www.aop.com
I think Bob Jones is a little easier than A Beka. I think A Beka is very facts/memorization oriented and Bob Jones has a little more application/thinking. I've used both on my children.
I like CLP. If she likes to read or be read to SL is nice. I am also more ecclectic and go with the girls' interests.
My daughter will be in 2nd grade when we start back up again in August. I too used A Beka for her last year for 1st grade but we did it at a slower pace so it wouldn't overwhelm her. Because it is so advanced, I'm not buying her another curriculum this year, we're simply going to finish her 1st grade stuff up. If she finishes subjects before our school year ends, I'll just buy what she needs as she needs it. Something to consider if you still have quite a bit of last year's curriculum left. Hope this helps!
We are using Calvert, and, from what I have read and learned from others who have used it, it is not really "advanced" until the older grades and then it mostly has to do with the writing they are doing early on, which I think is a good thing. Another option, is there a particular subject she is struggling with? Maybe consider dropping it and buying a something different for just that one (or two) subject. We do Calvert K, but we add in ETC because he already knows what they teach in some of the first part of Calvert K. We like the stories and concepts, but the letter learning part is behind him, so we supplement. Along the same lines you could supplement, slow down, or replace parts until this year is over so you can make sure she is definitely getting it.
