Sorry you have to deal with that. Unfortunately people seem to feel the need to make fun of things they don't understand. Yeah, your kids may not be experiencing a "normal" kids' life, but what an amazing experience they are having. They get to see things and do things that most of us just dream of.

Thanks everyone! The funny thing about the conversation was that the guy who said those things about homeschoolers also said that kids don't learn ANYTHING in school except "socialization" - it was totally his and his wife's job to educate the kids, but they had to go to school for all those hours in order to be socialized. Heck - if it takes that long for them to be socialized, then there's something wrong!

Nancy keep up the awesome work!! Those people are just jealous!! I promise you they are, but they would never admit it!! I have seen what comes out of the public/private schools and I WANT my kid to be a "freak" rather than what the schools systems put out over here!!!

I told my husband about this last night. He said the same thing - these people first of all know NOTHING about homeschooling and homeschoolers and second of all they are completely jealous of you and your family. Because what you are doing is different from the norm they see it as bizzare even though deep down they would give anything to do what you do only they are too scared to try it.

Nancy, I am sorry you have to hear such crap from ignorant clueless people. Honestly, those people just really need to grow up already. Geesh. Just do what Kate and Jon do (from Jon&Kate Plus 8)...they just pass them by and don't even give them a second look or thought. When you thrust yourself into a sort of limelight you will always have naysayers, and some of those naysayers will be down right rude because they have nothing better to do then to worry about something they are completely clueless about. I sometimes chalk the naysayers up to jealousy as well.

I think it's awesome what you are doing with your family. What a totally unique and rewarding experience. I am sure your children will look back on it when they are older are realize what a wonderful experience they got to be a part of.

Oh, and Nancy...I'm not always "all there" either. ;) LOL

Haha! There is/was a kid in Tanner's K class who was the poster child for socialization gone bad. They have a cool down room, and this child was in it everyday, a couple times a day. Of course you will find those types of children everywhere regardless of where they are taught, but whenever I think of a prime example of a PS child gone horribly wrong...I think of him. LOL I got to meet his parents one day. The apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree. It's probably a good thing he isnt' homeschooled. I can't imagine what he'd be like if he were after meeting his family.

I'm late as well. Just wanted to say hang in there. I think you are providing your kids with an awesome opportunity. Look at how much they really will be learning.

Hey Nancy- good to "see" you!

I think your kids are wonderful young men. You are all having a fantastic experience, and while unconventional, no amount of time at a desk would give your boys the same education as what they are receiving in real life. I don't know that I'd be able to pull it off, but certainly admire you for doing it! Don't let the negative weigh for too long!

We all homeschool differently, and face it, kids are kids and sometimes have a bad day. Like someone said, "Some days I'm not all there either"!

Keep up the good work- I have to check out your blog this week still too....

I would wish them well on their future endeavors and forget them. If you feel led, explain how you're teaching. If they don't see traditional textbooks they will naturally wonder how you can be teaching.
