Hello! My husband and I just started home schooling our 1st grader this year and just found this sight today. Looks like it will be a great help. We have decided, with all the local issues in CA considering home schooling, to go through the school district. It seems to be a good program. We are assigned a teacher who will visit with us every 20 days. We help build the curriculum and do all the grading. We also get funded by the state ($1,500) a year which can be used on books and/or outside classes like music or karate. I think my son will pick karate, but I'll let him decide. I'm not sure if there is any one else here who has experience with this sort of program or not. I would love to here your views. All the best from CA, Sarah
Hi, I am Beth and we live in NC. We homeschool our two youngest daughters and this will be our third year. We are doing 10th and 5th grades. Welcome. Beth
Hi Sarah and welcome! First, I wanted to let you know that CA is safe to homeschool in independently. That whole court case is over and the ruling was in our favor - YIPPEE! Second, remember with the district or charter schools to know what you want and stick to your guns. Just like any gov't program sometimes their first answer is no, but if you push a little they often give in. Third, if the program you signed-up with is not working out for some reason, you can always change to another gov't program, a private program, or go independent. You are not locked into it for an entire year or semester or even month - you have all the power. Fourth, I was with a charter school for several years, but got tired of playing the game, having the rules change on me, and doing it all myself anyways. I have friends that are much better at working with the gov't programs and they are benfitting from the programs. I found it all a headache. Fifth, where are you in CA? We are in the OC.
Welcome! We are in Southern California and homeschool independently or privately. We are members of HSLDA so they help us keep track as to what is going on in Cali as far as homeschooling is concerned. I have found that homeschooling as a private school is much easier, for us, than going through a program. We were part of a private program for a few years and I find much more freedom homeschooling the way we do now. But if going through the school district works for you, that is great!!! Glad you joined us!
We are in Sacramento for now. I hope to move to OR or WA sometime soon. Thanks for the in put. I'm glad to know there are options for getting out of the program if we need to, for now I think I will use it o help us get the hang of it. =)
Welcome! I'm glad to see these parents with CA experience could give you some good feedback. This is a great group!
Welcome to the forum Sarah, I am glad the homeschooling problems in CA are over, I am very pleased to learn that CA funds homeschooling. I think every parent has a right to choose how they want their child educated.
California only funds charters or government programs, such as independent study through a public school. They do not fund private homeschoolers which I am glad about.
