The district that we live in goes to school year round. Keeping with that schedule (so the kids wouldn't feel too left out), we started school July 17th. I had planned to break every sixth week. I have been so busy making sure we "get it right" I forgot the first break! So, we are off all next week! How often do you all break? Is it scheduled or just sort of unplanned?
Ours is kind of unplanned. We do take a summer break, but it hasn't had a set time yet. During the "school year" we go until we can't stand it anymore then take a few days or more off if needed to get our heads back in gear.
Our breaks from schooling are both planned and unplanned. Our school year starts in Feb. We usually have about 2 weeks off end March/April. Then 2 weeks end June/July Another 2 weeks around end Sept/Oct. We will take all of December off All of January and early Feb off. We also take all public holidays off here ( just had 4 days off for Eid Al Fitr)...public holidays are announced the evening before we are given them ( moon sightings take place) We also take breaks when DH travels. ( so far since June, we have had short trips to Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and India) We don't have to report how many days we school ( thankfully)
We try to keep it along the same days as the school system, but not strictly. We take the summer off and then have 1/2 a week for thanksgiving, 2 weeks for Christmas holiday and then a week for spring break. I've decided not to take the snow days and that way if I feel like taking the day off here or there it won't bother them getting their work done. Last year we did take snow days off so that we could end our school while the ps was still making up their days, I think 2 weeks early, lol. However, I do like the idea of year round school with breaks here and there. I have been giving it thought too. btw...we don't have to report our days either. I just keep track for our own records.
We do not break with the public school but sometimes our breaks do cross. We started school on July 9th because we wanted to take a break from Thanksgiving until New years, so we started earlier. We usually work through the breaks the schools usually take. We do take time off for Easter but usually not a whole vacation break.
We break when we need to. Because of living on a farm - certain times of the year we need a week or 2 off. I do try and school year round though making it a little easier and honestly I think it keeps my kids heads in it more to continue the thoughts and work. I don't keep up with the regular school system - we'll still be doing work on the 12th (Columbus Day) cause I see no reason to have the day off. For bigger holidays - if relatives are here then they get off. Otherwise they can work until the day (such as Thanksgiving they will still do work on Wednesday - but probably have Friday off as well as Thursday)
I try to keep up with the school calendar, but I take mini breaks when I need them. We started on August 4 and the ps didn't start until after Sept. due to budget problems. So we are ahead a month. I took yesterday off to get clothes organized for winter. I like taking a few days off for fall because of the lovely weather. I plan on working hard until after Thanksgiving and then taking off in the winter when I need it. I hate the month of February. By then winter is forever long and we are antsy. So we take indoor field trips then. McKinsey
My oldest is in school, so our major breaks (Christmas, Easter, and summer mirror hers), but we rarely take days off that she is home for teacher in-services or Columbus Day type holidays. We save those one hit wonder days for fieldtrips and days we just NEED a break
We school year-round. We plan breaks for holidays & birthdays. We always end up with at least one unplanned break each year, though. In the time we've been hsing (this is our 5th yr), we've dealt with 2 divorces, 2 weddings, 1 birth, 3 deaths, 2 surgeries, and we moved once (not counting the other people we helped move). That leads to a lot of unplanned breaks & days of light school work. We've also taken a few breaks to rethink how we do school & make some changes. I only plan breaks for the holidays that we'll have plans for (Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July) & our birthdays, because I know that something unexpected will come up & we'll have to take unplanned breaks during the year (our families can't seem to go 1 yr without something major happening).
