My son is in a prek 3 class this year that is 2 days a week. Yesterday there was a room mothers meeting. So I went. And of course I had to bring my dd who is homeschooled and the baby. Well, of course, what do you think happened. Oh, little girl, why aren't you in school today? Are you sick? Hey, not in school today? I think 6 women walked in that room and all asked the same question. And why would you ask a 6 year old anyway, wouldn't you ask her mother!!! ARG!!!
I was faced with judgement. And do you want to know my favorite condesending question of the day was..........So she's okay not being with others? I wanted to punch her in the face. Sorry, I know that's harsh, but I'm like, stop assuming that my daughter is a shut in because she doesn't go to an institution everyday!!!

Sorry, I had to vent. But you ladies have been there and you understand.

Vent honey! That's what we're here for! I would have felt the same! You should have said "Yeah, she loves it! We keep her chained up in the basement except for dinner time!"

I had someone say something like that last year at their library group (mixed hs and ps) the gramma said "Well, now they'll be able to be around other kids".

    ehm

well my first thought was that it is not that strange that they ask why she is not in school. is that strange? the main thought of people is: child not at school > what's the reason > can only be sick.
So I don't see the problem.
It happens here all the time.
And when I walk around in the shopping mall with my homeschooled kids (almost the only ones in town) and I see so many children with their moms....I KNOW they are not homschooled and I think 'you can not be sick (shopping mall) ....so why are you not in school??'

Don't let them get to you!
Don't make it so easy on them!
    Just homeschool ;-)

Ems still gets questions about not being in school but not as much as usual. Homeschooling has grown drastically around here. So most people now know why she isn't in school during the day. It isn't uncommon for us to run into homeschoolers wherever we go.

I wouldn't be upset about the asking if she was sick. We still get that constantly. My big thing would be the comment that one woman made.
But they're right, is better not to let them get to you.

Amen to that! I hate it when people ask foolish questions. I feel like asking, "how come you allow your child to go to school to get a substandard education?" Or "so your child is ok with the druggies, bullies, and pedofile teachers?"

(DISCLAIMER: I am saying all this in jest....I am not suggesting anything about all schools or all teachers...just responding to the stupidity of stupid questions..lol)

Gosh we know how you feel vent away.

For that question "So she's okay not being with others?"

I would have said something like ummm lets see "Oh yes I try to make sure she is not around crazy people that ask a lot of questions" hehe I am sure someone could come up with better reply.

Oh maybe "Your serious? hmmm dont know much about homeschooling do you.

But don't ask my six year old, ask me if you want to know why she's not in school.

That would have been such a good comeback if I would have had the guts to say it or even the wit to come up with it quick enough!!!!
