Do any of you work from home while homeschooling? Do you find the two mesh well, or does one seem to overtake the other?

My dh and I both work from home (although he travels a lot with his job) My job is just part time for the most part, and I'm hoping that I can effectively balance the two

I think the main thing is to remember that the schooling has to come first, cause it is more important in the long run, yes your job is important but if the kids need help you have to be able to help them... planning the curriculuim to be mostly independant learning is helpful in that area I forget if you mentioned on anothe rthread what you were using?

School is definitely our priority! I'm a photographer, so it's fairly easy to make my work fit MY schedule. So far the plan is school in the morning, work in the afternoon during their reading/free time.

We are using Saxon math and Weaver...which will be pretty hands on for me, but that's something we wanted, especially this first year. I didn't want to pull them from school just to make them do all independent work.

I'm a lifestyle portrait photographer. I shoot mostly families, teens, and babies.

Right now, it's just extra income. But we are looking at my dh changing jobs and going to school, so it may become more of a needed income.

i agree that schooling has to come first, but i run my own business and am just setting up a holistic therapy business, but it is flexible and works around my husband and kids, it pays for our well deserved breaks abroad and for our education supplies. it can be a juggling act but when we take the children away it is really worth it :)

I am trying to find something to do to work from home. Right now I do college full time myself in addition to hs'ing the kids. That is practically the same as having a job at the same time. I just make sure that my time for the kids school comes first in it's designated time but I revolve my own school work around theirs. Fitting it in when it's available. :)
Welcome to the board. Welcome to homeschooling! Hope all is going well!

I work from home but usually I have a few days out of the month where I am gone for travel. If my work calls it definately takes priority, but that doesn't happen often. I also drive into the city for meetings every now and then, next Tuesday we have a big awards banquet at the zoo and I'll go in then, that kind of stuff.

I don't usually give my son the day off when I'm not around - he always has to do Japanese and Math regardless, but I will often cut out language arts stuff and print up a busy work type of unit study. Last month he did Alaska and the Yukon Territory to get ready for Call of the Wild, and one on ancient China (we're doing a huge unit on ancient China now but it is pretty serious adn that unit study was just the "fluff" the give out free on the internet type of deal.

I don't have a problem balancing the two but all 7 years we've been homeschooling I've always been in school, worked, and done homeschooling at the same time so I don't know what it is like to be able to devote all my time to one thing.

I work full time nights - thursday night to sunday night. We hs mon-fri, with more independent work on sleep days.
I find it works ok - it is harder on me, but generally works well for the family. Also, as the kids get older and more independent it is getting easier. It can be done.

I clean houses 2 days a week, But I have my sister who homeschools also come those days and helps. (my kids are older and could stay here but I feel better knowing there is an adult in the house.) I get up early and get home about 12:30-1:00. I started with 2 houses and now I have 9. I also had to start turning people away. Who ever says the economy is bad these people are out there and pay good!!!
We school M-F , While the days I clean are lighter with the younger ones. I always school a priority though.

Both dh and I work from home full-time. Schooling is difficult, but as long as we stick to a schedule it works for now.

I sew for a living and dh drives a truck. Some days are harder than others but the key is balance and routine. If the kids know when a & b take a nap it's c's quiet reading time then you can get in a little work. I"m independent so I have the luxury of working when I can and not reporting to anyone else. If you work at home for someone I think it's sometimes harder and stressful due to other's deadlines.

Also depends on what you do. I know in our house i could never transcribe or answer phones. There's always something that needs mom's attention. :)

I own my own business but do the actual on site physical work in the evenings. I slip the paperwork in whenever and wherever I can.

This is our first year hsing and my dd is 12. She still needs me hands on a lot right now because we are new to this - so that makes it a little difficult. But it's getting easier as she is getting more independent.

I used to substitute teach at a local Christian school. I said I would do that as long as they allowed me to bring my kids. One parent complained one day that she was afraid I'd give more time to my children than to her child who was paying to go to that school (my kids were in different rooms--the other teachers let them visit for the day when they asked me to sub. They'd grown up with these kids and teachers so we knew everybody). That wasn't the case, but it certainly was a legitimate concern. I told the Principal that I did NOT want to make anyone uncomfortable or cause problems for the school, so I should stop subbing. They didn't have many good subs, so she was reluctant to let me resign from subbing, but I think it was best for the school, as well as for me (it was a lot of work to plan classes and get my kids there, and monitor them and the kids and the classwork and clean up, etc., so I wasn't unhappy about quitting to tell the truth).

This year I am doing day care for a 5yo and throwing in a little K work as well. We had a great schedule going, but it's been off since we started watching her. She's not too hard, it's just very different. We have her from 7ish am to 4:30ish pm. Not bad hours. We're getting used to it, and I'll hopefully get things worked out so we can keep our school schedule going well. Right now we're a bit behind where I wanted to be, but I'm not worried about it, we're doing okay!
