The super Intendant here is claiming that NM schools dont offer homeschoolers any special services such as speech and occupational therapy anymore...
What do I need to do now? How can I find out if this is legit?
I'm so sick I think I may puke now....

I'm not a member of HSLDA either. If I join would they help me?

That depends. I know in Ohio they don't have to offer services. If services were REQUIRED and your district either didn't know that or tried to BS you about it, HSLDA could help. But if the district didn't HAVE to and they knew it, there would be nothing HSLDA could do.

I don't know what the law is in NM, just what it is in Ohio. And I know this because my hs'ing friend with connections in the State Department researched it for another friend who was denied speech for her hearing impaired son.

hey, there are people who do that on the side, check with a Montesory school, they often have a speach therapist who will come to thier schools to do the therapy.

Do you have friends who are teachers? Perhaps they can hook you up with somebody they work with. I have a few teacher friends and they usually can help us out in one way or another. Good luck!

VA doesn't offer services either (at least I don't think they do). Your state homeschool organization might be able to offer some words of wisdom (since you aren't a HSLDA member).

Does your health insurance offer assistance? I know some do.

We do have health insurance but services are still really expensive. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do though. I have an apt set up for him to see his pediatrician on the 9th. I'll talk to his doc about getting him back into speech and OT through the rehabilitation center in town.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

Special services aren't offered here either.. I know several who use cyber schools so that the kids can get the help they need.

Louisiana is another that doesn't offer services. However, I was informed that both of my children who were in need of speech in Ohio in the public school (both with an IEP) did not qualify for services here anyway.

I have to get tested here then from there they can say if he needs full time within the school or maybe offer a few hours, this time around the speech person at the school district was really nice so I plan to go in there in person the next few days.

Anything else would have to be in San Antonio and we would have to pay for it checking out a program now at one of the universitys.

Also another option is to appeal our insurance

Going to do more research, pray and talk to hubby.

Check with HSLDA anyway. I think that they will still point you in the right direction even if you aren't a member.

I contacted THSC they were not much help they directed me to a volunteer website "Texas special kids" run by a mom dad volunteers. This site contacted me and told me pretty much i was at the mercy of the school system that if they took me or not. They told me to be nice to them and ask if they would let my son in..

Then they told me about this University in San Antonio that had this sliding system available and if I had more questions to contact them again.

So I did in the next email told them to tell me more about this sliding system. They wrote back said they didnt have time to keep up with the University and told me again how busy they were.

I wrote them back and said I understand but could at least tell me what sliding system is?

Gee wiz, I am so frustrated.

A sliding system is one where there's no set fee, but it's based on your income. I would contact the University directly.

I go thru my Dr. for extra the referral for extra services. We have the Child Development Center for speech and other stuff, along with HeadStart. THey come to the home if you want them too. That how it's here in ME not sure what it's gonna be like in a year from now when we move.

Nope... the school is willing to test him, but they wont provide services unless I enroll him. Weird huh? I guess they think if they diagnose him (he's already been diagnosed through my doctor.) I'll enroll him.
We have to go through our insurance but our co-pay is insane... I'm not sure what we're going to do at this point.

Jackie looks like we are going through the same thing but in different states. The school told me the same thing. Maybe you can do the same thing for New Mexico.

Well I did a search online for Speech schools in Texas and the Our lady of the lake is the closet one to us. According to the Texas Speech Language Hearing Association

    http://www.txsha.org/texas_university_programs.asp

I contacted Our Lady and they said they offer a Speech evaluation for $175 flat fee then speech tutoring for $55 and lower based on income.

    http://www.ollusa.edu/s/346/ollu.aspx?sid=346&gid=1&pgid=1041

Well we are middle class so I doubt we will get any lower. My other speech class my insurance was paying was $175 an hour so this is a lot cheaper.

So now we have to decide to go to the public school and have a chance on having to enroll him or try the other and go to SA once or twice a week and budget this in.

I am so frustrated still that the THSC didnt have any information on this that took me a few hours to have to find. I am going to send this information to them so hopefully they will have this in hand for others later. I am also going to put this on my blog so maybe others here in Texas will have this information and dont have to spend days on it like I had too.

Just wanted to pop in and say that it must depend on each ISD in Texas, b/c my school district provides the same services to homeschool kids as well as public school. They actually send someone to your home if your child qualifies and does not attend public school! My DD is currently getting once a week speech services at the local elementary school, but once she's out of pre-k they will send someone to our house rather than me sitting in the school office for 30 minutes.
