hi all we live in england, and our dd1 is 5.75years old (6 in feb) so if she was in a school she would be a year 1. so if we were in america what year group would she be, cause i get confused by this thanks for your help
She'd be in Kindergarten. However, children are not required to attend school in most states until they are 6, so it would be possible for her not to start school at all until this coming fall, and then be in kindergarten. Why do you want to know, just out of curiosity.
i wanted to know as all the books i have divide children in to american year groups, so it gets confusing here, as i am not sure how the years work cause over here children have to be educated the term after there 5th birthday!
In most cases children in Kindergarten are 5 (or just turned 6 if they have a late birthday) at the beginning of the school year. Typically (varies if a child starts early or late).... K: 5-6 years 1: 6-7 2: 7-8 3: 8-9 4: 9-10 5: 10-11 6: 11-12 7: 12-13 8: 13-14 9: 14-15 10: 15-16 11: 16-17 12: 17-18
Kindergarten is not a required grade in any state that I know of, so if your child was age 6 at the start of the school year, they could go right into first grade. But yes, your dd is the age of most kindergarteners here in the states.
That's not exactly true. Where I am, you don't have to go to school until 6, BUT our district REQUIRES Kindergarten. That means that if a kid doesn't start until age 6, he's still starting in Kindergarten. That's what it is where I live; am not saying it's like that all over the state.
Wow... Jackie.. thanks for sharing that. I have never heard of a place where K was a required grade. These poor kids are pushed younger and younger and it is so sad.
By your daughter's birth date she would be in kindergarten if she attended public school in my state. Kindergarten is not required by law in our state. Every school district in our state is required to have at least a 1/2 day of kindergarten available though. Required school age is 6 here.
For homeschooling purposes, the big difference between K and 1st grade is if your child is reading. If your child knows all of her letters and the sounds they make, can count to 40, knows her shapes and colors, and can do simple patterns, she's probably ready for 1st grade. A lot of curricula have sample pages or placements tests that you can look at to decide where your child will fit.
