I liked the looks of the approach. I bought the first volume and half the books used - my mom bought the rest of the books for a Christmas present. Any thoughts? I have a 4yo and 10 mo and I thought they would both enjoy it.
I personally don't like FIAR, but I'm the exception. Most people have trouble because they can't get the library book they want WHEN they want it. You won't have that problem; I'm sure you will LOVE it, and your kids will come away with enjoying books. You may also have the added benefit of your 4yo "reading" the books to the little one!
I love FIAR, but do have the problem of getting books when I want them. We just do it in the order we can get the books. I have bought some of the books, but not all. If your dd likes lapbooking make sure you check out Homeschool Share. There are lots of FIAR Resources on the site!
We used the off and on with kindergarten and first grade. After that, I prefer something more in depth and focused. We do more traditional unit studies after that, and it seemed a good transition.
We use FIAR and I have been slowly collecting the books to make it easier to do when we want. I second the HSS site that Pam mentioned. It is great!
We just started using FIAR. I have 3, 6, and 9 yr olds. I had ALL of us sit down and read the book. For the 3 and 6 yr olds the activities are perfect... for my 9 year old they are a good starting point and a nice way for her to learn more about what she is interested in! We pulled her out about a year ago, and she has difficulty knowing "what" she wants to learn about. It's all been hand fed to her in school, with no choice. I want her to CHOOSE something she wants to study more in depth. This is a nice way to introduce lots of new new ideas and jump on those she likes and taking them further. Edie
Edie, there is Beyond FIAR for the 8-12 group. I use it with my dd10. The books are chapter books instead of picture books, but my dd has learned lots this year! You are supposed to average 4 books per semester, but my dd is a struggling reader, so we slow it down some.
Sounds like we are going to like the approach and that it will better fit DD's learning style. Thanks for all the input.
