My dh is a journeyman lineman. He builds and maintains power lines. Right now he is building a new line putting in those really big metal power poles. He's worked on alot of storms getting the power back up and running. But he is thinking of changing careers. He is dreaming of becoming a missionary pilot.
My dh is technically a carpenter. He installs fire doors for churches, Walmarts, and the like. He is the only installer covering PA, DE, and NJ, and he periodically goes to NY, MD, and Washington DC. Since you asked, I'll tell you a cool story about what the fire doors do - it always gives me goosebumps. Our company's doors are installed in the Pentagon. There is a testimonial on the video from a guy working there on 9/11. He says (and I'm paraphasing) that he heard a loud explosion that morning and went out into the Pentagon hallway to see what it was. All he could see was this huge fireball coming towards him, and he knew he was going to die; there was no way to escape it. Then he heard this clicking sound, and the fire door closed directly in front of him. So that's what my dh installs, albeit at varying levels of fireproofness (is that a word?). SG
Hubby works at a door manufacturing company. They make indoor and outdoor wood doors. He is a sprayer.. meaning he paints or stains them. It's easy work and good money for around here. His set hours are M-F 6:30-3, but usually works 4:30-3. After work and on the weekends he also pulls in extra work doing some home remodeling/repairs for people.. and then his true love is detailing vehicles. His goal is to open a detailing business along with a chrome plating operation (some huge money in that field!!).
My dh works for the city, he works for the road department. Sweeps the streets and salts/plows the streets when it snows. He works 7:00am - 4:00pm. He is on call 24 hours, they can call him in anytime. He has worked there for 31 years and is contemplating retirement in March.
Handsome is a Superintendent/Foreman for a concrete construction, or tilt-up, company. His hours depend on the time of year, the size of the job, and where it is located. Depending on his job location, he can leave as early 3:00-4:00 am. Depending on the time of year, he can start as early as 5:00-5:30. The only time he can't start until 7:00 is when the building is near a residential location, which isn't often since his company sometimes builds buildings as large as 800,000 sq. ft.
My DH used to be the Director of a Convention Center but after his accident last year, he resigned from that and stepped down to be the Head Audio Tech for a local School Districts Major Facility. (Football Stadium, Indoor Arena, Convention Center, etc.) This way, he does what he likes (Audio) but is no longer responsible for the WHOLE facility. He works 11am - 7pm, hourly......instead of 80 hours a week... As he did on salary...
DH is a railroad engineer. He started with the railroad about 5 years ago. He is on call for 10 days in a row, then "suppose" to be off for 3 days. When he is called in, he can be gone anywhere from 12 to 48 hours at a time - but the average is about 36. His crazy schedule is one of the main reasons why we homeschool. Our kids hardly see their dad as it is!
My dh is a police officer. He works the night shift and has to go in during the day for court appearances. He is rarely home and awake at the same time.
Dh is a journeyman electrician and is in the process of becoming a Warrant Officer with the Army National Guard.
Dh has his own business working with carbon fiber. He does a lot of custom work for people that LOVE their cars, then we do some jewelry and also sell carbon fiber tubing. He tries to have set hours, but that doesn't always happen!
My DH has a construction company here. Hours vary on where the current job site is ( sometimes its outside the country) Hours also vary due to season and factors such as Ramadan. He also spends some time working from home ( he has been at home working for 4 days as it is Eid, and all sites are closed)
My dh works for Morton Salt.... ya know the little table salt and pepper shakers, he runs the machine that cuts out the tin bottoms for those. It's shift work, usually his shift is 3-11, if we didn't homeschool the boys would only see him weekends. On the side he has a herbacide/pesticide business. And in the winter he cuts and sells firewood.
