Hello! In our dramatization of this era ds11 wants to fit together who fought with whom... who fought King Richard the first, king richard "the lion hearted" also was there a king of England during Charlemange's rule of Franks?
I Can't belive 18 people looked at the thread and NO ONE had an answer.. sniff sniff, what will I tell my ds? Someone out there already studied the Middle Ages.... dint they?
King Richard I was known mostly for his crusade in the Holy Land. He fought against the muslims to gain back Christian control of Jerusalem. There were other small battles in France and Itally. I recommend the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" to get an understanding about the crusades and what was happening in Jerusalem at the time. You may want to preview it first (PG-13 for fighting and brief sexual scene), but I see no problem with a middleschooler seeing it. Check out Wikipedia for more info.

I loved "Kingdom of Heaven", especially when I learned that the character wasn't entirely made-up. Several of the scenes we had read about in our studies. I had Rachael watch it when we did the Crusades, but not the other two. According to Kingfisher, Egbert of Wessex was the first kind of a united England in 829. Charlemagne was Holy Roman Emperor from 800-814, though he ruled as a king before that. "Saladin: Noble Prince of Islam" by Diane Stanley was the book I enjoyed reading.
