on the news last night where a school in Michigan was asking parents to help buy toilet paper, paper towels and something else. The school budget had gotten so bad. I think this so sad. The story was on NBC nightly news.

Didn't see it but it doesn't surprise me. When our kids went to a Dept of Defense school, the PTO had to raise so much $$ because the school was given a small budget (like less than 10K for 650 students)...but they hadn't physically received that much even though that was budgeted. Now because it was on a military base, they didn't have to pay for electricity or rent but still. $15 per child for an entire year. Teachers bought things they needed for the classroom themselves, parents were asked to bring in a supply list at the beginning of the year (more than just school supplies), teacher sent home notes or asked PTO mom's to bring in paper, etc. The PTO raised 15-20K a year just to make things like Field Day happen.

The good news is that the school is AWESOME esp. considering the financial issues. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan have just tapped out the DoD budgets and all those military mom's who were raising $$ would agree that we'd rather have our soldier have Flak vests and bullets and bring in copy paper to the elementary school :)

That is sad. Our men fighting for our nation and thier having to raise for the schools that their childen attend. Those moms need a reward.

I didn't see it, but when DS was in k and 1st we were asked to send in all of the supplies needed for the classroom and to also send extra for the music, art, library etc. It was crazy. When I went to school they supplied things like notebooks and pencils and crayons.. we had to supply all of that plus paper towels, cleaning products, tissues, zip lock baggies, you name it we were asked for it.

I didn't see it either. Our schools have been asking parents to supply the students with what they need for many years now. This includes boxes of tissue, Firstaid Kit, and papertowels.

    WHY DO WE PAY TAXES?

I remember the days when all we had to do was walk into the class and pencils, books, paper, rulers, and toilet paper were supplied.

I used to joke that someday the school would ask for the kids to bring their own toliet paper. I didn't realize it was actually happening.

At my son's old school we had to supply everything short of toilet paper...in addition to the regular supplies (pencils/crayons etc.) we each had to do tissues, paper towels, box of wipes, dry erase markers, ream of copy paper, zip loc bags, bottle of hand sanitizer and I know there is more than that I am forgetting and I joked that I was surprised toilet paper wasn't on there since everything else was....it probably will be next year! As a former teacher we really did get NOTHING I paid for Tons out of my pocket every year so I understand helping out the teachers but some of this is insane that it's not provided

yea, when my dd's were in ps they had to bring everything from the house but the kitchen sink. What do they do with tax payers money?

I remember helping my dd's teacher cleaning out her supply shelf at the end of the year and I couldn't believe all the things she had from years of asking, baggies, tissues, film, why do they keep asking when she had tons of them.. I don't get it...

I didn't see it but living in Michigan I can tell you that I'm not a fan of our governor. We are so in debt here and unemployment is out the roof. Living in the U.P. it is as if we don't even exist to her. The budgets up here are extremely tight.

A man at our church is a teachers aid at the elementary school. He brings boxes full of things the teachers are throwing away at the end of the school year and we use it with our kids at church. It is crazy! Last year he brought finger paint sets that hadn't even been opened. He says some of the teachers toss things rather than store it. Crazy to me.
