I need to find a spelling program for my kids. I was using spelling power but ditched it as it wasn't working for us. I purchased Spellwell A for my 3rd grader because it is from the people who made Explode The Code. But now I'm second guessing my choice. I can't decide between Spellwell and Sequential Spelling. Anyone have advice on them? Likes or dislikes. I know that what works for one doesn't always work for another. Any help is appreciated. Angela
I have used SPelling Power, Sequential Spelling, Houghton-Mifflin Spelling, Calvert spelling, and I know there are more. What finally has worked for my youngest, who has issues with spelling is All About Spelling http://www.all-about-spelling.com/ If your child struggles with spelling, and i have no idea if he/she does, I would highly recommend it. I also recommend it to people just starting the spelling journey as it is a very solid program. It is heavily phonics-based and introduces the spelling rules slowly and in an easy to grasp way. Like Sequential Spelling it is a multi-sensory approach, but to be honest All About Spelling really is and we found Sequential Spelling lacking. You use spelling tiles to spell words, to touch when sounding things out, etc. You write words and sentences too. The child will listen to you say a sound and have to tell you which letter or digraph makes those sounds. Not to give you one more thing to look at, but I wish I had found it long ago.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE sequential spelling. No fuss, none of the other yuck that other spelling programs have. It may seem to easy at first but that is the beauty of it, it gets harder and they don't even notice! I love the program and so does my son.
We have used Abeka, Reason for Spelling, ACSI spelling, and making our own list. Making our own seems to be the best for now. My dd has a terrible time with spelling and gets overwhelmed when the list gets long. So on MOnday, I introduce 6-8 new words. THroughout the week, she will use them in sentences, put them in alphabetical order, type on the computer, and form them out of playdough. By test time, she usually has down. I do actually pull our words from published spelling lists, but you could also make a list from words related to a subject your studying or words that are frequently misspelled. Just an idea.
THis is great! I am going to get one of these every so often since we dont have Spelling this year, I am going to toss some in here and there even though ds has perfect spelling record! Last year he kept getting all As in spelling tests so we decided he could have a year off as reward but I have been working in a few fun word games and such to keep him up wiht out knowing its a spelling thing , He will also be playing word games oN SOS science 7, that he will be starting up today!
