We are looking for a K math program for next year. I know I want something with a hands-on component, that reviews past skills and focuses on understanding and memorizing basic facts. What have you guys used? What do you like and don't like about it?
We are doing our own thing for k math this year. Basically I am just finding work sheets on-line, on-line games, as well as using flash cards and other little things I find here and there. So far we have covered basic addition and subtraction, telling time, place values in addition to patterns, shapes, number recognition, counting to 100+, counting by 2's 5's and 10's. Right now I am starting to introduce basic multiplication (2+2 is the same as 2x2 etc.) I do tend to switch it up a bit so ds doesn't get bored.
I really like Bob Jones for math. Their K math program uses a farm theme-- very cute. You get a Farmer Brown, Mrs. Brown, and mouse paper cutout puppets to use to help learn. They also come with a lot of animal manipulatives to help with counting. It's a very colorful book with lots of fun pictures in it. It has a little review section at the bottom of each lesson.
My soon to be K'er will be 5 in July. We are working with some Kumon workbooks, then we will start Saxon 1 in January (or sooner if he's ready). I have found that most people either love or hate Saxon; really no in between. We love it! It is very repetitive but my kids need that. We'll also play plenty of games.
Check out Horizons. Lots of repetition and memorization. But it moves fast, so it's not for everyone. I'm not sure there would be enough manipulatives for you, either. But I like it!
I used Saxon 1 for my dd when she was in K. I'll have to say that's the only Saxon math that we ever did well with. Every other grade we tried Saxon in was a bomb! Bob Jones is known to be good too. I used A Beka for my ds now 15 when he was in K. It was very colorful and my ds liked it a lot. In fact, he liked it so much that he got it done in 2 months!
