I'm trying to get a list together of favorite nonconsumables. Since my three are so close in age, and we're still trying to adjust to only having one income, I'm trying to save every penny I can.
My library card LOL! Sorry, that was really the first thing I thought of. The second? My computer and printer. But I know that's not what you're looking for. I'll be curious to read what others post.
Let's see, some of my favorite nonconsumables.... Well, there's the obvious ones like math mnaipulatives & science tools (microscope, telescope, weather station, etc.). Natural Speller Roots & Fruits Vocab Teaching Textbooks Writing Strands Rosetta Stone Learning Through History Magazine I'm sure there are others. I'll post them if I think of them. Mainly we use a lot of books. We have a large home library, and visit the public library every week.
I have my Apologia Science books and Story of the World w/activity guides that will be used when my younger ones get older. I got a new one, A Child's Geography that I will use with my younger ones. Right now they tag along with their sister. I have counting bears, and cursioner rods, Lego's simple machine lego sets for both younger ond older kiddos. That is all I can think of for now.
Thanks! Keep them coming! We moved from the DFW area in TX about 6 months ago and left behind a lovely library that spoiled us. Our current library is so-so and doesn't have half of the stuff I look for. I am looking into borrowing from other libraries in the state though.
If your library is lacking and you actually have some books that you would like to pass on I would suggest www.paperbackswap.com - I've sent and received dozens of books that I would NEVER have paid for at a bookstore and that our library didn't have. There is an active homeschooling board there too and you can find great deals and support as well. Jane
Rod & Staff English-- student and teacher book are hardback and nonconsumable. The extra worksheets/tests are consumable BUT they allow you to copy them for your class so they're not consumable if you have access to a copy machine...the worksheet books are really cheap though and if you don't want them or the tests, the English curric is thorough without them. Very reasonably priced esp. when 3 kids will use them. Apologia (elementary books at this point, moving onto middle school next year for the oldest) IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) A Child's Geography (Vol 1 is all we've used so far) My oldest is using Sonlight Core 3 and Core 4. Plan to recycle it to the younger ones when they are ready. It definitely wasn't an inexpensive option for us but owning the books has expanded our home library and we'll all enjoy them for years to come (even if we don't get them all read during their SL year). This is a great thread. Gonna have to ponder any other items and keep tabs on what other share.
I just picked this up at the library yesterday! I haven't had the chance to really look at it yet. It looks pretty good.
Something to consider....dont consume consumables. I am required to do a standardized achev. test each year by my state....I use the C.A.T. test. One year I noticed my child had copied a math test problem incorrectly on their scratch paper. Having 5 children, I realized there was no reason I couldn't have them copy the problems into a notebook and solve. (Or english, etc. etc.) So, I now have two benefits of this....less money spent on cirriculum and the kids are quicker and more accurate in taking their tests. what non-consumable do I use? Voyages In English, Apologia sciences, Rod and staff (readers and english)...these are my favorites.
