Has anyone had any luck teaching computer science or programming on the high school level? We have a program called Scratch and Alice we downloaded and use. Any ideas we can use for high school credit?
I have been searching for something at the middle school level...more of a user sort of class. Keyboarding...how to use exel and PP and all that. No luck.
I was planning on researching for my son who will be in middle school - what are programs usually written in now and days?
My husband teaches this in the public high school. He also teaches a computer class out of our home for hs'ed kids. A computer class of some kind is now required where we live, but he's not sure if that's a state requirement for graduation, or just a district one.
My kids used something, the name escapes me. I also had them build web sites which they donated their services and they also set up a couple forums for practice. Now they are very good at it and charge for their services.
Computer Science Lab My son has been using Computer Science Lab and really enjoys it. It is a curriculum written by a homeschool dad that works in the field. He is VERY helpful if you ever have any questions or problems with the program. He says that the program takes about 1 1/2 years to complete. We are extremely happy we found it!! He has also used the computer literacy cources through Alpha Omega and really enjoyed them. HTH! Michelle
Michelle, is there a web site that tells about that? You're new, so you can't post links yet, but do it anyway and we'll cut-and-paste it. (Welcome, btw!) I don't want to do a search myself; I figure if it type in "Computer Science Lab", it wouldn't be narrow enough.
I don't remember the name of the program but I do know that ds uses http://www.bravenet.com/ for the web sites.
I was thinking the same thing this morning. My son is really into gaming and has worked with different gaming making downloads. But hasn't found one he really likes. He would to learn to code in java or c+++. I am checking out the sites you guys posted. thanks
Computer Science Lab Computer Science Lab is the name of the program.....just add dot com for the website. HTH! Michelle
Dd is studying Python. I've heard it recommended as a first language, before Java and C++. She did a little programming previously using Scratch (free from MIT, easy for young kids and easy to find on google). She also knows some LaTex (a markup language used often for math documents) from Art of Problem Solving classes. Python is a free download and plenty of free resources. Snake-wrangling for kids is a free book for learning Python. Another book I recommend is Hello World - it is still on pre-order at Amazon but if you google the publisher you can find it on the web for download, the first chapter or so for free. My dd loved the free chapter and we ordered the e-book. She's about 8 chapters in and has learned a bunch.
