I'm kind of eyeing Teaching Textbooks on the rave reviews it seems to get. Are the books consumable or reusable? The program seems pretty expensive, but if I can reuse it for all three kids, it's reasonable. Edie
Technically they are consumable... but they are expensive to replace.. so for me, I plan on not allowing writting in the book... I will either photocopy the pages (I know.. law breaker me!), or have the kids write the work out into a notebook. Really they can just do the work right on the computer... and not even use the book.. but I don't think you can print work samples that way to show who ever you may need to in your state... here it's our evaluator and our school district, so we need something concrete.
I have used teaching textbook books for 2 years now. There is very little space for them to do there work and show there work in the workbook, so it's best they do it on another piece of paper. They leave just enough room to show the answer but not the work. So, we do ours on paper.
My son used Pre-Algebra and has now started Algebra TT - I do not let him write in the book so I can resell them! Also, agree that there's not a lot of room to do problems.
We knew we wanted to use them again or resell them to be able to get more, so we never even thought of writing in the book! It's just as easy to do on paper! We really liked the TT math, but have moved on to other math now.
Rachael did Geometry last year and Algebra 2 this year. She doesn't write in it her textbook. She does them on a separate paper. I need them to stay nice for the next two kids!
I don't think they're supposed to be consumable, at least not once you get to Pre-Algebra. If you look at the site, the lower levels say it comes with a workbook, but the higher levels come with a textbook. We started with Pre-Algebra, so I was kind of confused about the question until I looked at their site. So, I think up through Math 7 comes with consumable workbooks, but Pre-Algebra and up are completely non-consumable.
Brandi, that makes sense! I was wondering about them being consumable too, since mine didn't seem that way!
This is our first year using TT, and we haven't even opened the book! DS just pops in the CD and does his work on a separate sheet of notebook paper. I'm toying with the idea of selling the workbook (TT Grade 5) along with the other items I'm listing on ebay soon. Then I think, what if I need it when my 1st grader hits 5th grade? I don't plan to buy the workbook for next year. I just don't see a need for it...unless something happened to the computer or there was an extended power outage or something?
Yes, he listens to the lecture. Then there are 5 practice problems followed by 20 or so problems that include review of recently-learned skills. The screen shows the problem, he writes it down and works it out on notebook paper, then he enters his answer into the computer. It tells him right away if his answer was correct before moving on to the next problem. There isn't anything for me to grade because all of it is recorded automatically. It really couldn't be easier.
Another question (Jackie maybe??)- my son is finishing SOS 8th grade math. He loves math, and I plan to use the placement tests from TT. But does it go: Alg 1, Geometry, then Alg 2? I think he has had enough algebra to skip #1- but I am not sure which one to get then. Thanks! MT3
Really? the Sos 8th grade goes that far? I better look again at it! Cool! Did your ds enjoy doing the SOS8math? Can you ask him to give his recomendation or review on it for us? Thanks!
It's up to you as to whether you do Geometry or Algebra 2 next. I think the web site gives opinions both ways.
Teachermom- LOL- I'm not sure how far SOS goes for certain (that's my dilemma with TT)- but my DS picked out several of the "Keys to..." series in the algebra and metric stuff earlier this year. So he's been working on his own too. I'll ask him later what he thinks of the SOS math... Thanks Jackie- I'll check out the comments on the TT site too. MT3
My dh said dd likes Mr D. with MUS so we will get the Alg with him on it, but I am still eyeballing that Pre A for ds in TT.... the price does sound like a good deal there.
MT3--There are Placement Tests on the TT site that you can have your ds take to see where he lands. It'll give you a better idea of which one to get. Both of my boys did Algebra 1 & 2 and then Geometry. I think it's really up to you, as Jackie said, and that's how it has worked out best for my boys.
Alg 1, 2 and Geometry...The *rational* of one way or another... I have been told and I have also read that the decision to do Alg 1,2 and Geometry depends on whether or not you will take the PSAT test. Since Geometry is on the PSAT, and the test falls during the year public schools teach geometry, then you need to take it in the midddle. It was much easier for my dc to take Geometry AFTER Alg. 1 & 2.... Kids can take the SAT/ACT and not worry about the order, if standardized testing is desired. Personal opinion rocks! LOL We get to enjoy it b/c we have our dc learning at home D Blessings, Sherri
