The Book of Samaritan provides free books and free curriculum to families on a tight budget. http://www.booksamaritan.com/index.html
It's also a great place to GIVE to as well. They rely heavily on donated items - so if you have things that you're not going to use, and don't want/can't sell....
I always wondered if there was a way you could set up something local with that same thing in mind? People could show up and pick out what they need and drop off what they don't. You'd put the little label/stamp inside the book so they couldn't sell it, of course. Do you think something like that would work?
That would be really neat. I bet it would work out great if someone did that. It would also help with not wanting to buy a "big" item without trying it first.
I just checked it out. Awesome! Most of my books are promised to a friend, but the books that she does not want will be sent there to share with other hs families. We struggled just about every year to buy curriculum so I know how it feels. It would be great to bless other hs families who are in the same boat as we were. We always were blessed with being able to buy all the curriculum which was needed even though it was always a struggle. Thanks for sharing!
Where we used to live we had what was called; The Lending Library It was wonderful! Set up like a library at the church... Blessings, Sherri
curriculum exchange, local if you want to do local curriculum exchange how about setting it up in your local homeschool group....... we have a continually revolving "FREE" box...... things go in, things go out....... we also do a clothing exchange and bring what we can't wear...... and take what we need....... we were all sick when our group had that this spring.......
I used the Book Samaritan once! They sent us a ton of things...I was really surprised how much they sent. I think a curriculum exchange is a great idea if you live somewhere that has a large homeschool population. The clothing idea is also cool. I always thought that would be something cooll to do at church but we don't have a lot of kids to begin with...and we just hand things down already anyway. I honestly thought about starting a homeschool or education second hand store. There is one in Texas...they also have a website but I don't remember the web address.
There is a used curriculum store in Memphis, TN, too. I used it lots when we lived in the area. They also ship using exact media mail. The last time I looked, the website was under construction. I need to take another look, as I still have a few things left to buy. I checked, it's up and running and has lots of FIAR books!!
THanks Pam! I checked out that site and it looks great. If you spend $50 you get free shipping. That's awesome.
