I am homeschooling 1, in 2nd grade. We use a variety of materials for homeschooling. We have a great group here who we do a lot of activities with and really enjoy being at home.
Hello and welcome from another NY'er! We're in Queens and my 8yo and 12yo are homeschooled. I also have a 15yo who goes to a journalism high school. We also use a variety of materials, but use AmblesideOnline as the core. Angela I blog
HI there I am up here in the Rochester area. We use an ecclectic approach for sd (11th grade) but next year I will be doing Sonlight with dd (1st grade). Welcome to the group. Maureen
I think I found your blog several years ago and may have even emailed with you a bit. lol Great to see more NYers here!
I joke that I'm a transplanted Northerner who now has her roots deep in the southern soil! We've been down here 23 yrs now and I don't know if I could go back to the winters up there! We lived at the base of the Catskill Mts so winters lasted forever. I have a sis up in the Ithaca area who homeschools her ds. I'm hsing my youngest (dd) who is almost 14. You've found a good support system here at the spot!
from ny as well Hi, I am a new yorker as well and am thinking about home schooling my 6yo kindergartner. He has adhd and some sensory issues. He is on meds and doing well but hates school. He is bored and complains about everything. He has a hard time transitioning and needs lots of breaks.I have been working with him on spelling, math, reading and some sight words. He is responding well. My question is how difficult is it homeschooling in ny? There are so many laws and it is quite confusing. How do I approach the school and where do I start? Any help will be appreciated.
Hi Kmonty I know the laws in NY look really confusing but it really is not that difficult to homeschool in NY. Are you planning on finishing the year or pulling him now? If you plan on pulling him now all you have to do is send a letter to your district's superintendent withing 14 days of pulling him. If you are going to start for next year you would send the letter by July 1st. The district will then send you information and a request/form for an IHIP. You do not have to use the for they send but I find it easier to just fill it out. On the IHIP you just list students name and the dates that you plan on sending in your quarterly reports. You would also send in an annual plan with your IHIP (some districts have it as one form mine has two) where you just state what you are covering for the year and what curriculum/books you plan to use. You can be very general on it. The quarterly reports are just a summary of what you have done that quarter. For grades 1-3 the annual assesment is just a write up, you say who is going to do it and the Superintendent will approve it. For grades 4-8 you have to do a standardized test every other year and the others you can do the assesment. If you have any other questions just ask. I have to run I just was told the pizza is ready
Thanks mschickie, that's a great help. I have not decided what to do yet. The kids have been on spring break and I want to see what happens when he goes back on monday. His last parent teacher meeting did not go very well. He missed 10 days of school as we were in between meds and trying to find a good fit. We finally did and he is doing much better (less hyper, less impulsive and more focused). One thing I do notice when working with him is he gets very tired very fast. He rubs his eyes and looks drained after a page or two of work. We have to takes lots of breaks. His teacher sees the same thing at school but he doesn't get the breaks and then gets defiant and refuses to work. I just wait all day for another call from the school about his behavior. They can't seem to handle him even on the meds. He can be difficult but just needs to do things at a different pace.My heart goes out to him everytime he goes to school and I think about him all day long. This is such a difficult decision, I think I am just waiting to get fed up with the school. I just about there. My husband wants to have a meeting w the school to see what they can offer him next year. I told him this is it. They won't offer him anything he doesn't already have. Sorry this is so long, I'm rambling.Any advice is greatly appreciated.
hi from Florida i was born in Buffalo, Ny but grew up in South Florida. i actually went to college a few years in Buffalo and then moved to Northern Florida. i have started homeschooling my 5 1/2 yr old this year. (technically he wouldn't start til fall because of october b-day but he was interested so we just go at his pace. my 4yrold is doing preschool stuff and my little one (15month old) has a little bit to go before she starts. we like the Charlotte Mason style but are flexible with some things. i like carrie Austen's curriculum at Heart of Dakota Publishing. i have learned a lot already and i am so excited to teach my kids and have such a network of support. i have a good network of local moms to glean from as well. Well, I'm not from NY and have only been in the northern states once in my life, but I did want to say hi and welcome you to the group.
