Looking ahead to next year - I have a hard time selecting what materials to use. My problem is that there is so much out there and I don't want to waste time and money (you know, you try something, don't like it, then try something else).

I'm sure for math I'll go with Saxon, but I'd like something like Saxon for the other subjects (all laid out). Any suggestions?
    History, English, Science, Health

    Thanks! :)

Check out Christian Liberty Press, A Beka, Bob Jones University, Queen's Homeschool, Right Start, Rod & Staff.......

We used the R&S English, and I LOVED the Teacher Editions, because they laid it all out, it made it so much easier/clearer for me to teach my kids!

You can do them both together for history and science. Two good World History programs that are good for multi-grades are "Story of the World" and "Mystery of History". I prefer MOH, but many people here like SOTW better.

Do you want them to work together or seperate?

My dd and ds canNOT work together..... no matter how I want them to.

We are using AOP's Switched on Schoolhouse - and then I plan on enrolling them with Kolbe Academy in June so they will take a few of their other classes as well and have transcripts etc and I'll get used to that as my dh wants it for high school.

I liked Mystery of History - kids didn't. I like Apologia Science - my daughter LOVES it and I'll keep doing it with her this year.

You can use Ambleside Online for a lot of "living" book choices - learning through literature is great and I wish I had the time this year to do the planning I did this past year - but I already feel time slipping from me ;)

Okay, are you looking for "textbook" type? Also secular or Christian?

If you are looking for a "textbook approach" that is secular check out these places. They come with everything you need. They both offer complete packages in varying prices.

    homeschool super center

    homeschool stock room

For Christian the above posters have covered that.

I use Rod & Staff for English and Spelling, we love it. Sometimes you can find books used on their website. You can also find a lot of used ones on www.vegsource.com

We really liked English 5 and English 6 from BJU, great for teaching the details of sentences and writing styles! Really good!
BJU stands for Bob Jones University btw.

You know -this is the season for the start of a lot of conferences - that way you can make a list of what you want to look at and go touch and feel everything!!

just remember that conferences are expensive too. here they are way too high for me I dont know about where you live. It would be good to check into them and look up the sites of some of the names we listed to see if they are there, also see if the selling area is available to the public wiht out having to pay for the conference!

Have you used Abeka? If so, how does BJU compare?
Currently we use Abeka and I like how it's laid out.

Thanks for the links. I like to use both secular and nonsecular, so I'll check them out.

Okay, for Bju and Abeka, for 13 yr old, I am researhing on those myself as mine will be 12 next year.
Sotw is writtin in story form but you can branch off of it as a spine study and do so much more with your 13 yr old, MOH is where we are going next year. The Red book. Not sure what your 13 yr old is looking for in History? What time period I mean?

I have seen 9th and 10 grade levels of Abeka and BJU, my dsgraduate did them in his Private School a couple years back.
I like both of thier lay outs and if money is not an object either one would stand. They are the tops for teaching grammar, vocab I think just very intense.
    and pricey.

Oh, I'm so glad you told me that sotw is in story form - my 9yo would hate that. He's a BIG history buff, and story form would not be what he'd want.
Anyhow, money is not an issue (thank God), so I might just go with Abeka. I'm just so tired of piecing things together (printables, library books, etc.) it takes so much work. I just want to have a book for each subject that we can just go thru during the year. I noticed that I start spending too much time on the computer searching for stuff to teach my kids than actually teaching them!

Oh - I'm a search junkie for new stuff!!!

You might want to look at Sonlight - especially with a history buff son :) My son would love it I think with all the reading and history within it. But since dd would probably dislike it - I don't bother with it.

I just checkout Homeschool Stockroom and, at first, their entire pack seemed great - but they really didn't give enought info - so I did a search and found some VERY unfavorable reviews on that company!
    http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/homeschool-stockroom-c129063.html

Judging from these reviews, I think it's best to stay away from that company.

Oh well. I'll keep looking :)

    Dana,
I'm a search junkie too, but I have to stop! Is there a 12 step program for me?

BTW, I took a peek at your farm - is that really yours? If so, I'm so jealous! My dream is to have a view like that!!!
