What other history programs in a CM or classical method are out there for grades 4-6ish? I am looking for the middle ages. I loved SOTW but my kids were a bit too old for vol. 1. It wasn't detailed enough. I loved the format...and the activity book. If I don't find something else for the middle ages I will continue on with SOTW and just supplement more..as I did with the first one. My kids learned more from the history channel..in greater depth and in a better sense of timeframe than Vol. 1 of SOTW. AGain...I am not bashing it...we loved it...I just think it was more for 1-2 graders. Which, I think it was intended for anyway, right? Again, looking for something on the middle ages....thanks!
I have not used it yet, but what about History Odyssey? Level 2 is written for 5th grade and up so some activities may be a bit advanced for your 4th grader, but I'm sure you could make it work.
Thanks...I looked at the website and they allow you to download weeks worth of lessons to try out! THANKS!
There's also Streams of Civilization. I haven't actually looked at it, but the curriculum (My Father's World) that we are going to do next year uses it.
Streams is used by a lot of other curriculuims it seems, so it is worht looking at. I looked at it with my kids and they were not interested in it. But it is a real text book, long in size kinda neat!
I am looking it up but there is one called Medival times has a castle on the front.. I almost got it befohttp://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/history-geography/thematic-units.htmre SOTW, book 3 http://www.christianbook.com/Christ..._rollup&Ntx=mode+matchpartialmax&Ntk=keywords Okay niether of those is it but they look good sotw--is great for my 11 yr old.

Volume 1 of SotW is intended for first graders but it can also be used as a jumping off point for 5th graders. All you do for your 5th grader is to step up the work required of them. The second edition of The Well-Trained Mind suggests having your child read the section/chapter and then outlining the corresponding pages in the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. I've heard there's a new version recently released and they may have changed a few things.
Thanks Heidi! It seems I may have judged SOTW vol. 1 a bit unfairly then. It is right on track for early elementary grades.
My dss used Streams Vol. 1 for high school at a Christian school. I helped him study for his tests, and REALLY liked the book. I had planned on using it with Rachael, but decided on Notgrass instead. I've read that Streams Vol. 2 isn't as good. It is a high school text.
Thanks Jackie! I don't want a high school text. Oddly, I think I may think about MOH again. Through experience and a better understanding on how a history text of that variety works, I think I was wrong in my assessment of MOH. I expected MOH to be something it wasn't. After having the practice of supplementing in historical fiction and narrations...having more of a classical mindset...I know understand the set up of MOH. I think I would like it now. I guess what's important is knowing that when you buy a dog expect it to bark and not to meow otherwise you may judge the dog unfairly. Live and learn! Not sure if I will try MOH but I am thinking about it...or I just may go back to SOTW...and supplement with more bible history...I will think about it some more.
