Hey, We have a couple threads where some neat ideas were mentioned but I was thinking of how I would have loved to know some of the ideas when we were in the begining of home schooling.
I had no idea then that I could rent movies to go along with what we were studying in history to give the kids a picture view of how things were in those days.

Of course today there is more out there with Discovery channel and Nova, and PBS expanding so much.
We can get science and history to our kids in a way we have never done before!

The idea of reading fiction novels as a stage setting is awesome! DD did this for the past few years, and we have added in movies of the books we have read, or gone to check out the books we have movies for... either order works because you can discuss the differences as Jackie mentioned she was doing with the movie Tora Tora.
what a better way to instruct our children with life in the time of study?
This year we have watched many knights and kingdoms around the world type of dvds because it is where ds was learning, we have watched US history things and I am looking for modern history from the 60s if anyone knows of a good dvd I can order for that because she got up to that era and had a few questions for me... I was born but was a babe! HA!

so what worked for you? What great ideas have you heard of?
I know there are notebook studies, there are lap books, but what else is out there?
Some folks here have dawned period costumes and acted out plays for the time they were studying!
    Tell me more!
    Thanks!

We have had Ancient Egyptian Feasts and Medieval feasts, where we invite family & friends and cook up all the food of the time, lots of fun.

We made a working model trebuchet, which was very cool.

    Paper models of goldifelds housing.

making clay runes. Pyramid models. Carved a sphinx out of floral oasis. Painted pictures with heiroglyphs.

Made a full size shield out of wood, and painted on made up crest designed by ds based on combinations of family crests, and other symbols with meanings of his choice.

    Yes.....my house is crowded!
