Hi everyone, My daughter Francesca (10 years old) is a book lover. Since we started homeschooling in 2007, she read lots of books and now, I don't know what to buy next. Here's a list of books she read (more than once! Because every time we order a new book, she go back to book #1 and read the whole collection again, and then, she read the new one.): The Guardians of Ga'Hoole Septimus Heap A Starbuck Twins Mystery Unicorn Chronicles Series of unfortunate events The Twilight Saga The Percy Jackson and the Olympians Harry Potter Eragon well...I wont name every single book she reads....would be way too long!! We don't have a library with english books where I live, so I can't go and spend 2-3 hours looking around and let her read books until she find something she will love. I have to order my books online. If you could help me with a list of book your children enjoy, I might be able to order something good for her to read during summer time. Thanks for helping me. Heln
wow she does like to read.. I really don't know whats out there my oldest just reads and reads everything she finds in the library it's always something different. Have you tryed the Nancy Drew books I dunno what they are like haven't read them here. Hardy boys theres tons of books. What kind of books does she like?
Get her the David Eddings series The Belgariad and its sequel series The Mallorean. That'll be 10 books in all. The first book in the first series is Pawn of Prophecy. The books are really fun reads. Just have her skip the prologues and start with the first chapters.
My daughter has read Eragon, Harry Potter, and Narnia and liked those. Looks like your daughter has similar tastes.
www.booksalefinder.com You can look at for book sales in your area, library sales, etc. Hmm, not sure if it works in Canada, but I'm posting it for anyone else, and it might work. How far away is your nearest library? Can you put books on hold using the internet? I put 25-80 books on hold and do a big pickup (there is a limit of 10 per kids card, and we have an 'educator' status on mine & my husbands so we can put 20 on hold). I've had libraries where the limit was significantly higher. If you can check out a huge batch, then it might be worth the drive; compare the gas cost to what you're going to pay for ordering and shipping so many books. Teach her the joy of re-reading your books. If she's ten, she's old enough to start chipping in for books, as well. If you're ordering books from online, go to half.com and browse their used books. If you order more than one book from the same person, you get a discount on shipping. Amazon does NOT give you a discount if you order multiple used books from the same vendor, but sometimes if you email them and ask, they will provide one, although there are possible problems with that. If you can find someone who specializes in YA books, then you can let them know you will probably be a frequent customer, so if they can work with you, they will get even more business... www.abebooks.com also gives you a discount on shipping from the same person through the site, but they do tend to focus more towards collectors than not.
Thanks KrisRV and Shelley for the ideas. momofafew, I would suggest the Percy Jackson and the Olympians...she learned a lot about greek mythology. My DH read the collection too. I am just waiting for summer time to read them with a lemonade on the side of my deck... scottiegazelle : There is no such thing as english books, english movies at the theater, or english magazines near home. I ordered a few used books with Abebooks and the shipping was expensive. With Chapters, if I order for more than 39$ of new books, shipping & handling is free. Heln
My dd (13) loves the books by Erin Hunter. There is a Warriors series (cat based) and a Seekers series that are bear based. She started reading those several years ago and still looks forward to the new ones. Phyliss Reynolds Naylor has the Alice series which are also really good. What about the Magic Treehouse books?
Chekc with whatever library is closest. Ours lets homeschoolers take out up to 40-50 books and for a month at a time. We can even call in to renew. Also check out paperbackswap.com it may aid in keeping your daughter reading w/o breaking the bank
She tried the Warriors and there was to much war and battle for her taste. Magic Tree House collection is a ''bathroom'' reading for her...way to easy. Its done in an afternoon! My son(9) is reading them. Just for an example...she read Twillight in 2 days. So I need something that can last a few days...at least. Heln
Some classics are now public domain and can be read (or downloaded) online. http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page This is one of them. I haven't used it alot yet but thought I'd mention it. My oldest daughter enjoys the Dear America series and has really enjoyed all the readers/readalouds from her Sonlight cores (she's used Core 3 and Core 4). You can view Sonlight's lists on their website. www.sonlight.com Rhonda
Heln, Your dd sounds a lot like mine. A voracious reader that is maybe reading above her grade level. Have you tried some of the classics? Anne of Green Gables series, Little Women, Chronicles of Narnia, Elsie Dinsmore series. How about The Phantom Tollbooth? That's a good suggestion from rcmx5, Project Gutenberg has loads of books that can be read online or printed and it's completely free! LucyRicardo
I was going to suggest Little Women! I loved Alice in Wonderland, The Borrowers, and The Boxcar Children at that age.
I can't keep enough books around for my younger two either! But at least we DO have a library nearby with books written in English! That must be tough! How about: The Ann of Green Gables Series (already mentioned--great books!) The American Girl Books (Course if you're in Canada, then maybe that wouldn't be that great for you???) The Scarlet Pimpernel Streams to the River, River to the Sea (about Sacagewea) All-of-a-Kind Family Helen Keller, The Story of My Life Around the World in 80 Days The Adventures of Tom Sawyer All Creatures Great and Small Alice's Adventures in Wonderland These are a few my dd has read and, mostly, enjoyed.
