Is Night Crossing the one about the family that flew a balloon over the fence separating East and West Germany? The one they made a movie out of? I showed it to my class when "the Wall came down". (My kids had NO IDEA of the significance of that event!)

Okay, let me try this again!

What reading level is The Night Crossing?

I know somebody already claimed the book.
The reason I am wondering is it sounds like a book that might work with our unit this school year.

OK, I looked them BOTH up! They are both very different. Here's the book:

It's hard to leave your home and friends, but the Nazis have invaded Clara's native Austria, and her Jewish family is no longer safe. Clara and her family take only what they can carry and travel by night to the Swiss border, where they hope to escape to freedom. Soldiers are everywhere, and it is Clara's heroism that carries the family across the border, their lives and few precious possessions intact.

    And here's the movie:

Night Crossing tells the incredible true-life story of two intrepid East German families who hatch a plan (during the Cold War, of course) to escape and head west by using hot-air balloons. Starring John Hurt, Jane Alexander, Beau Bridges and Glynnis O'Connor, this family drama is an inspiring tale of the extraordinary lengths oppressed people will go to find freedom.

The movie, btw, is very good! It really helps capture a sense of what is was like in Communist Europe during before the wall came down. It starts with a boy crashing into the barbed wire fence, and being shot by guards. I had one boy in particular who just sat there wide-mouthed at the idea that a person could be killed for trying to get into another country.

Amazon places it at 3rd/4th grade reading level. Saying that it's appropriate for 9-12.

I'm interested in the learn at home grade 6. Is it a total curriculm guide to teach your child at home? Is it one that has all the work pages included? Do you need lots of stuff outside the book?

Sorry for the questions but we are getting ready to hit the road and are needing something that is portable and has most everything in it and doesn't take up much space...

From what I can tell it's a pretty complete curricula.

The cover says "A total curriculum guide to teach your child at home"

The subjects listed are: REading, language arts, spelling, math, science and social studies.

It is broken down in 36 weeks...each subject has notes, etc. on what you teach, cover, etc...and then after the planner pages are the workbook pages that are completed during those weeks.

The front 10 or so pages are detailed information of additional supplies (like, for example, you'll need graph paper for math for some of the activities). It does appear through reading this that it's basic school supplies that are needed. Extra practice could certainly be supplemented free through internet resources, for sure.

From what i recall fromt he lower grades is that there are recommended reading resources, also...i.e. books you could check out of the library.

I hope this information helps. :D
