Do you teach them both at the same time? That is my plan for next year with Ry..and maybe dragging Reagan along too... but I don't want to over load her brain. It's not too much to do that is it? I figure the sight words I'm going to make into games so they will all be light and fun.
Its been a while since Ems was working on phonics and sight words, but if memory serves me correctly, I think we did them at the same time. Playing games while teaching sight words sounds like a good idea. It is fun and the words will stick better.
We do them together. I pick a couple of words each week and we have a "word of the week". It wasn't too much for my 4 year old.
With one of my boys we did drills, games and some reading and writing. With my next boy we did reading , reading and more reading, and some writing. Now nearing the end of grade one I'm testing his spelling of sight words and he is spelling most of them correctly. Reading them is not a problem as we talked about them as they came up. The second way was far superior in our case. More interesting, happy kid and happy ma ma .
We do them together. In the HOP program every so often there are sight words for them to learn that are relevent to the next book they are to read. I guess we just kind of teach them as we go.
We use R&S and they teach phonics and sight words together. Each reading lesson uses what they've learned in phonics but there are also a few new sight words thrown in. It seems to work fine.
We are going to use HOP K level, and then some other things..and I just printed off the sight words by "grade level" and will make up my games for them this coming week. I think I will start with focusing on 5 sightwords and adding a few every few days to the games. I will share the games when I get them made.
