My oldest used this and did very well with it! He's more linear and it worked very well for him. He did very well in math subjects after that, even tutored other students in Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry for a job. The first part is a review, more like pre-Algebra, then it gets into the main Algebras. The last module was harder, didn't seem as clear, but he did it. He did the whole series in a row, half of the modules in 8th and half of the modules in 9th. He did Geometry after that (not the VT Geometry though, they didn't have that yet).
Thanks Deena! I am looking at it for my 9th grader and hoping it will help with the why's of Algebra, not just the formulas to memorize.
I have looked at it for my oldest. I think I've decided to go with Chalkdust instead for Pre-Algebra and then Algebra 1, etc. I liked VT from looking it over but I feel like Chalkdust will be a better (albeit more expensive) choice for her. They textbooks have color (which she's used too and wants) and the video presentations just seem more her style plus when we have a question, we will always get help from the actual video instructor, etc. I haven't purchased it yet but I did look it over at our state convention. She still has about 4-6 mo. left of her current math program. One other motivator was that Chalkdust has all levels Pre-Alg thru Calculus. That continuity was appealing. VT doesn't at this point. VT can send you their sample CD, etc. I enjoyed previewing it....but gotta go with what will work best for my DD Praying Chalkdust is it because we both seem to like what we've seen. (I realize this doesn't help you much but might give you other video things to compare it too).
I totally forgot about chalkdust. I looked at them last year online. They do look interesting. Hmmmmm???? What did you use before? We have used Abeka Video before and the kids like it.
We use Horizons Math....not videos...just little ole me My oldest does well in math but when she gets frustrated, she REALLY gets frustrated. It doesn't last long but sometimes I think it's the way I explain it...lol....figured video instruction for the upper grades is a MUST. I completed Algebra thru AP Calculus but I know I don't remember enough nor did I really understand enough to teach her well.
