    Hi Everyone,
I just thought I'd take a moment and introduce myself. I wish I would have found this forum sooner, just browsing, everyone seemed so helpful! So, I'm excited to be here.

My name is Marie and my DH and I have been blessed with 4 daughters, currently ages 5, almost 4, 2, and 8 mos! Kindergarten snuck up on me, for the last year I have gone back and forth on homeschooling, and now its time for even more desicions (help!!) lol. My husband supports me in my decision and wants to assist me. I do work part time from home, usually in the evenings. I attended public school, but my younger sister was home-schooled, and I also have a good friend who home-schools her children that I am close with.

I had made up in my mind at the beginning of summer that our oldest would attend the local public school k-8, but I just never could go register her. Then about a month ago my Pastor was ministering about something (not even related really) and it hit me in the pit of my stomach, and I was just sick over the thought of sending her to public schools for so many reasons, that I won't get into, because I'm already being long winded., and you all know them anyway.

I'm nervous, but I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

I'm searching through curriculums now. First I was set on CLASS, (for accountability mostly), and my friend uses Christian Liberty. But now I'm really looking at everything out there, and I'm not sure, but I'm thinking about the Horizons with Alpha Omega. Any thoughts or Advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Glad to find you guys!

Marie, Welcome. I am glad you joined us. If I could turn back time I would never have put mine in public school. This will be our 4th year. We pick and choose from different sources for our girls curriculum. Our girls are starting 6th and 11th grades. We have two other daughters and three sons who are all out of school now. They all went to public school. I love having my daughters home and we are so much closer to them and them to us now. Blessings on you homeschool journey. Beth

welcome aboard, i use christian liberty and think it has great stuff, there phonic is great, I use to teach K in a christian school my church ran, and they used ACE. Horzions is a good program too, you just need to pick something that will be good for your daughter and will be affordable for you.

Hi! I hope you enjoy homeschooling your daughters! Believe me from someone who learned the hard way-it's easier to homeschool from the beginning than to have them learn "school" in a public school and then to homeschool them.

Our first year we were very ecclectic. I like Abeka phonics. Especially for the younger years. We also enjoyed Saxon Math. Both dd's have learning disabilities and we have found that ACE works best for us. Can I recommend something? Maybe borrow, or buy a few things used. Try some stuff out before committing to buy an entire years curriculum. It can be a very expensive mistake.

    Good luck!

    Hi and Welcome,
We use CLASS for the accountablity(my youngest is 9th grade this year),however for my older daughter we didn't use a formal curriculum(although we are wishing we had now..LOL would have saved us alot of arguments..two strong willed women here).
Both of my younger daughters have been through the public and private school system before I listened to The Lord...another strong willed moment there. We have used Abeka,Sonlight, Mystery of History, Tapestry of Grace, My Fathers World, Konos till we finally found what works(oh they all worked and are fantastic). With our youngest she likes structure(I have to do up a chart that tells her what needs to be done and when..etc).

    You will do fine...

    Welcome!

We are homeschooling our youngest daughter. Our older two graduated from public school. We are in our seventh year and loving it!:D

This is our first year using Christian Liberty for history. A Beka is the only publisher we have used for history, I think, so this year I decided to put my own units together. But I was having a bit of a time putting together anything for the middle ages so I went ahead and bought Christian Liberty press and I will just add what I already have to it.

    Glad you joined us!

Welcome, Marie! I'm Jackie, in central Ohio. I am starting my 11th year of HS'ing. My children are dd15, dd13, and ds9. Do you know other hs'ers in your area? If so, see if you can get your hands on what they use to see if you think. But what works really well for one won't for another. I like Horizons Math for K-3, but I generally don't use Alpha-Omega because to me it's too much "school at home". But that's just me; many others here prefer a "school-at-home" curriculum, and that's fine for them!

You might want to check out www.cheohome.org This is the homepage for the Christian Home Educators of Ohio. They can be very helpful when you first start out!

Thanks for all the great advice, also reading alot of other threads has given me so many more ideas, its very helpful, and making me very excited! There is a homeschool group in my area called TEACH I'm going to contact shortly as well, hoping I can find someone with some kindergarten curriculum to take a look at, I think that will be very helpful...

Hello, I'm new here too. New to homeschooling as well. We just decided about a month ago. But, i've been thinking about it and looking into curriculums since last October. There really is so much out there. We are going with mostly Abeka, but for Science we're using Apologia and for History we are using Truthquest. With those 2 subjects and Curriculums we will be able to teach History and Science 1 time to all 3 of the girls. If we used Abeka's Science and History I would be teaching 3 different lessons for each. Check them out!!!

Good luck with choosing a curriculum, that was tough, but you'll do it!!! And then as the years go on, you can tweak it if you need to.

Great point on the History and Science! I hadn't even thought about that, as far as what I would be able to teach them together (although, I had been thinking of what I can reuse for sure).

I was talking with a friend today who also does not want to send her daughter to public school, but doesn't think she's smart enough too, I just encouraged her, I go back and forth in my head some days, but for every reason I can think of not too do it, I can think of like 10 more reasons to do it!

BTW homeschoolmama, how old are your girls?

    Welcome!

My advice for newbies freaking out about all of the curriculum options is to spend more time researching your kiddo's learning style. Once you understand that, it will be much easier to know which curricula will NOT fit that learning style. And Cathy Duffy's book is set up that way, to help out.

My Father's World is my wish-list "perfect" curriculum, if we could afford it. ;)

YES! I think I came to grips with that last night while reading through hundreds of curriculum reviews (I finally stopped, it wasn't good). I need to find out how she learns, which really I already know, she is very creative and hands on. Thanks!

Just wanted to say hello, we are in north central Ohio, this is our 2nd year of homeschooling. Last year we used an online virtual academy and might be moving into more traditional methods this year for K and 6th grade. I would love to hear what you decide apon for K. :D
