    Hello peoples!
I was just curious, because I knowthat some public schools in my state change thier school days according to when the days get too hot.
So I was wondering if Home schools are effected by all this>?
Personally when it is hot outside I want to swim , or bike ride or whatever outdoors offeres but not be inside in the muggy heat... what about you>

Rain is what normally gets us. All I want to do is lay around when it's rainy outside. The weather never seems to bother the kids though.

I'll have to come back and post more details later  but my short answer is yes. In the summer, it's flat-out too hot to go outside, and we have to get out of the too much tv habit.

I'm about to sit and set a yearly schedule that will allow for seasonal changes, including time off each quarter for seasonal happenings and holidays, as well as an approach for each season. (For instance, for the fall we're going to try a "one room school house" type of setting, where we all do the same subject at the same time on each child's level, like they used to do inside the one-room school houses! Seems like a good choice for fall, when the kids tend to whine about not going to a ps. ;) )

OH! We did that for a while! LOVED IT! back when there were all three home we did it a year or two that way because it made things easy on me! I could think MATH only for an hour a day lol !ITs funny when its too hot here ( we get the tripple digits too) we like to be out in stores or someplace cool.. movietheaters or some bowling where they crank thier air conditioning.. so we do a lot of PE, even swimming is fun ! ( we just came from two camps wher swimming was the main activity in 106-107 degree weather lol )

Yes, and we do some swimming and such during the summer... and it's interrupted with VBS and Cub Scout Day Camp and I don't know what all. But, I just write those weeks off and pick back up the next week with wherever we left off. We generally have a "park day" weekly through the regular school year, and during the summer it moves to a pool day. Haven't done so much of that this year, but it's a norm for us.

But yes, when it's too hot to go outside, we do school work. It just makes sense. Same thing for when it's too cold, excepting the busy holiday weeks. (And, during the month of December, after our Thanksgiving break and before our Christmas break, school is light - unit studies of interest, or workbooks, plus reading and *maybe* math or English.)

And when it's spring, we all get spring fever and want to be outside constantly, and so that affects us in the realm of... we get nothing done school-wise, so it's an unschooling, learn from life atmosphere for a while. (Camping trips, spring break vacations, visits from family, and making history come to life by visiting the places we study.)

So, it's a recent realization to me that our schooling really does fall into seasons. I suppose that's largely due to the weather, and it just makes sense to me to work our schedule around what actually happens, rather than trying to change what happens to fit the schedule.

Something else that plagues our school is getting bored by doing the same things all the time. Some things are set in stone - scouts are certain days, karate is certain days, AWANA on Sundays, and the occasional park day. But, for the most part, life at home becomes hum-drum, and even for my *please dont ever change anything* kids, it gets boring. So, I've decided this week - after taking an unintentional month off of school work, but a much needed break for all of us I think - that we'll break our schedule up into seasons and use different approaches for each. We're still doing the same work, but we're going at it in a different manner.

Really, we do that anyway. After about 4 months of a set schedule, it's like pulling teeth to get the kids to do what they've been doing just fine for that long. So, we take a couple of weeks and fight over it, a couple of weeks to figure out something else, and a couple of weeks to find the right groove for the next thing. And really, it's throwing us behind in all of our school work. So, I'm just going to start planning that change each time - a pre-emptive strike, if you will.

And by golly, I'm going to make sure we get a break each season to enjoy... the weather. ;)

(And wow, that sounded like the last line of a blog post. )

Yes. We typically start when the temps get too hot to go outside. Then we take things easy when the temps are nice. I love that schedule. But this year, with my son having ASD, it just is not going so well. He cannot seem to grasp changing the schedule. I have gotten him to start a little math. I am trying some hands on stuff. I don't have a look of seat work at this age anyway. We have spelling, math, handwriting, English for seat work at this age. The rest is hands on, child led, type learning.

No, well, maybe. We don't school much in the summer, because 1) Daddy is home and 2) we're running too much with camp, etc.

If the local school has a "snow day" and Daddy is home, we sleep in, but I will still try to get some things done. Sometimes we will declare a "Homeschool Snow Day" and try to get a group together to go sledding, but that may only be once a year. Last year we didn't do it at all.

Or if it's been cold and all, and then we have a really nice Spring day, we might declare a Spring Holiday.

Tina, I also declare Fridays as "Pajama Days", which the kids LOVE!

    Yes and no.

Last week we were at 115-117. One day the thermostat said it was 119 at the hottest. This coming week we are supposed to fluctuate around 110. So it has cooled off.

We tend to complete our school in the morning hours. So if we want to go outdoors to complete our lessons, it is still comfortable but warm. I usually do not plan fieldtrips in the summer because I know we cook. We also do not complete geography in the garage if the time has past the morning hours because the garage can easily retain a heat of 100 in the evenings. Last week we were humid and at 10:30 at night, it was still 110 in garage because the humidity was holding in the heat. Thankfully our heat is usually dry.

I was wondering this too, since the weather has a major impact on our homeschooling. I guess all of us texas gals are inside because the heat is getting to us. LOL But really we school in the afternoon during the summer because it is cool and nice in the mornings so the kids go outside to play. During the fall and spring time when the weather is just to great to be inside we are doing "science" outside, or reading. We try to do short reading and math to keep up with it. Then during the winter we do early morning school, and play in the afternoon when it warms up.

We take breaks for the holidays, and when we all need one. We also will break if we have a big order due in the shop (self employeed as well)

Ok we really do take time to school .LOL with all those breaks it doesn't seem like it.

We always school over summer here, as it is too hot to do anything else- so we may as well be doing school whilst sitting in the (relatively) cool house.

This week, has seen temps around 47-48 ( about 118F) with 70%+ humidity (yuck)....and we have been moving house.
Thankfully, air cons are now in, and the house is starting to cool a little.

As the weather begins to "cool" for winter, and it is much more pleasant, we take that time off, so we can enjoy more outdoor activities.

(even in this heat, we still do our normal activities though: swimming, horse riding and tennis)

    Yes it does for us.

We get so little of the nice weather and the heat that we tend to have fun then and school when it is cold. This is one of our reasons for starting so late.

We started school after Labor day and ended in May. On the pretty days we would take the books outside and do school work under the umbrella at the picnic table.

We do at least 30min. of some form of exercise each day for P.E. If the weather is nice, we'll go outside & do something. If the weather is too hot, too cold, raining, etc., we'll stay inside & pop in an exercise DVD.
Weather also affects our field trips. Outdoor stuff like the zoo, arboretum, or nature hikes aren't ideal activities when it's very hot & humid, too cold, raining, snowing, hailing, tornado warning, etc. So, we'll do indoor stuff like museums, aquarium, etc. during bad weather.
Also, if my dh is off work & we have really nice weather, we'll skip regular school work for the day & go do something as a family.

MAMA BEAR THAT IS oops sorry not meaning to yell haha... but that is what I do too, usually starting after labor day, as there is always hope my sister will come visit that weekend, and plus I like my kids to feel special homeschooling so we just wait until the ps is started a day or so then go for it.
It gets really hot in august here and I really would rather not sit in heat of at least 85 in the house ( we run air but if you run it lower it is way too expensive kwim) so getting outside to a cooler spot is always a better choice. We sometimes have gone to library to cool off in summer and tried working there but too many things going on there to focus.
I was really curious about the texans because I know your heat is way different than ours.
I also am surprised at Wyoming that you dont get much nice weather? When we have been there it was only for a pass through but it seemed nice.

Whenever she could, our older daughter just loved to climb a tree in our yard, perch herself where the main trunk split into several large branches, and read. Many times, we'd wonder where she was, and almost always she was hiding up in the tree. Much of her homeschool reading was done there. So, at a minimum, the weather did influence where she did her schooling.

For our older son, bad weather meant that homeschool baseball games were canceled - but that was about it.
