My 5 yr old can finally write his name!! And he seems to do it many many times a day. Bad news is..he likes the walls and the doors over paper. hmmmmmmmm

He is so proud of himself. But I have given him dry erase boards, paper, colored paper, typing paper, lined paper, manilla paper, etc.

I don't want to crush his proud little heart, but my walls are very....written on now.

Oh well, I think his OT would be thrilled to find out he writes his name now. LOL.

magic markers--- the crayola kind that discapear if they are not on the special paper! I would buy them quickly!
Then I would make him trace each one on a piece of paper to keep and make HIM wash the walls to teach him that there is a place for the work to be done.

My thoughts exactly! Grats on the accomplishment but definitely get some of the special markers and have him clean up the walls.

Have you done the whole "SUPER thrilled when he writes it on paper, bored when he writes it on the wall" thing? Is there something specific he's getting from it being on the wall? (being able to see his name at all times, standing up to write, the texture of the wallpaper, raised voices in response, that sort of thing). Is there any clear decision he makes when he HAS the paper he's allowed to write on and opts to write elsewhere instead?

Also, is his OT into the whole ABA approach?

This was my first thought when I read your post. It's what I did with my wall artist. We also went to the store and let her pick out her own paper. Of course she chose colored paper, but it worked. I set it up in an office tray with a set of colored pencils in her own cup next to it. (Didn't have erasable markers at that time, lol.) She was so proud of her own work station she bee-lined for it every chance she got.
She also learned how to write other letters quickly when grandma exclaimed, "Now you can write me letters and I can get mail from you." Of course letters of the alphabet is what grandma got, but she framed 3 of them.
