from formula to milk.... When did you all do it? My son will be 11 months on the 16th of August. I am starting to have a hard time of him drinking his formula. We waste quite a bit of formula. I was thinking maybe SLOWLY switching him over to regular milk so by his first birthday hes totally on it anyway. What did you guys do?

If he won't drink the formula anyway, and he is otherwise healthy, and is willing to drink the milk, I would go for the milk. It is important to get that milk in, or you will be stuck with a little boy who won't even drink the milk (like I am!)

My kids never drank milk...unless it's favored. I have no idea why since I love milk. My 12 month old hates milk...and she only had breastmilk and water until last month for liquids. Oh well. My kids are all very healthy anyway.

My oldest took bottles, I know he was totally off the bottle by his first birthday so I'm guessing (hard for me to remember!) that sometime in his 11th month we transitioned from formula in a bottle to whole milk in a cup.

My other two I nursed exclusively. They both weaned themselves between 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 months. So they went to whole milk in a cup at around 11 months.

Ask your pedi. You might want to do a 50/50 mix, by Sophies 11th month she was a 50/50 mix plus eating meals with us. Then on her first birthday she got a sippy cup of milk and never went back....lol.

Try introducing the sippy cup now. Just put water in it or if they won't drink water just do a 1/3 juice and 2/3 water. That way if it gets warm it will still be okay. Just so he gets used to drinking out of it.

have you tried different weights of milk? My father spent years trying to get us to drink the 2% he drank, and we loathed it, and then we discovered skim milk and were instant converts.

I talked to my ped.. SHe said that since hes healthy....hence 26 lbs and 6 oz and gets other food I can start switching him over to regular milk. SHe said she switched her own daughter at 11 months. I am going to start with just an ounce or so for the first 3 days or so and than up it too 2 ounces and so forth. Hes on similac sensitive so I dont want to uproar anything. KWIM?

That's what we did with both kids. By the time they turned 1 they were off the bottle & formula.

We started transitioning our oldest when he was 12 months. He was still nursing, plus having a little bit of formula. I continued to nurse, and then did 25/75 with whole milk/formula, planning on increasing it to 50/50 after a few days. He did NOT handle cow's milk well (which did not surprise me since he had to have soy formula), so we had to put him on goat's milk and he did great. (I still did the 25/70 for a few days, 50/50 for a few more days, 75/25 for a few more days, before going to full goat's milk.)

My other two were totally breastfed, no formula. DD weaned from breastfeeding at 11 months, as soon as she discovered goat's milk (my supply was not good, probably because I was pregnant again). My youngest DS nursed until 18 months, but had at least one sippy cup of goat's milk from 11-12 months onward.

We opted to go with goat's milk for the second two because of what happened with our oldest and also because we read that it was easier to digest/more like breastmilk. Our youngest actually did end up having "issues" with cow's milk, which we discovered when MIL gave him some at her house.

I think 11 months is a fine age to start the transition. :)

I never gave my kids anything in a bottle that wasn't formula or breastmilk. when they were about 11 months old I would put about an ounce or two of whole milk into a sippy cup and fill it the rest with formula (the taste would change but only a little) give them that for a week or so then slowly up the ammount of milk and less formula. Then by the time they were a year old the bottles were completely gone (since only formula comes ina bottle everything yummy you have to use a cup for) and formula was gone. It always worked out well for our children. I am hoping it will be as easy for this one too though that's a while off.

Rachael was born in June, and I was back in my classroom in September. I would use an electic breat pump during lunch, and had a supply built up. She would take either the breast or breast milk in a bottle interchangingly up to a year old, at which time she started drinking whole milk. My others I was home for, though I did sub one day a week from the time Faythe was born until I was expecting Phillip, so she would also drink breast milk out of a bottle when needed that first year.
