While searching through some cupboards today, I came across a couple of Horrible History books. I'd forgotten all about these! This series is incredibly popular in Britain, and our children loved them. They are full of curious facts and gruesome details, all of which bring to life a particular period in history. If you ever come across one, I'd very much recommend it. We never had a problem getting our children to study history. Some are being sold on Amazon for $0.01 (basically, for the cost of shipping). PS - I see the books have now made it into a series. Here are some excerpts on YouTube. Quite amusing, but not the same as the books. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4UeVL4SKoQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNwLDsOcG_0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvRWUCfAPs0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fadCAHjN-s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUBPqCa-tiE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wK8a1OUCN8
Sound pretty cool. I've always hated when they left out the gruesome stuff. I don't plan leaving anything out when teaching history. I'll have to check them out.
Thanks for the suggestion! We're doing ancient Greece and Rome this year, so I think I'll snag them from half.com.
My dd's love these!! The series used to be on HBO and Voom HD channel, my dd's watched them everyday. They teach history how it really was, guts and all, they loved that. I kept hearing stuff like " I didn't know that" or "Is that really true?" so we would go look it up. Currently my youngest dd is saving up her money to buy the box set, its $50 but so worth it. Also they have a book called The Wicked History of the World (by Horrible Histories writers). Here is a link to it, this is a great book also!!! http://www.amazon.com/Wicked-History-World-Horrible-Histories/dp/0439978149
Oh, my boys would LOVE those! DS1 has some Scholastic book filled with weird and gross history facts. I'm with CelticRose; what I read about the Aztecs just blew me away. I knew about how they'd cut the heart out of a living man, but never knew that cannibalism followed that ceremony. UGH!!! You definitely remember stuff like that...LOL!
